Overview

Synopsis

The Red Fury
In this family western, an Indian boy endures racial hatred in a white community. Fortunately, he is defended by a kindly farmer, and a schoolteacher. His horse also provides invaluable assistance. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky
Based on a book by Norman Maclean, and closely based on his own youthful experiences, this made-for-TV drama concerns Mac (Jerry O'Connell), a teenage boy who gets a job working for the National Forest Service in Montana shortly after the end of World War II. With the help of veteran ranger Bill Bell (Sam Elliott), Mac learns a lot about forest management -- and about life. The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky also features Ricky Jay and Molly Parker. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Against a Crooked Sky
Against a Crooked Sky is a remake of John Ford's landmark western The Searchers. Richard Boone appears in the John Wayne role, playing an ageing trapper obsessed with rescuing a white girl from her Indian captors. Another movie veteran, Henry Wilcoxon, is the ruthless yet honorable Indian chief. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Proud Rebel
A gentler but no less resourceful Alan Ladd stars in The Proud Rebel. Ladd is cast as civil war veteran John Chandler, while the star's son David (who grew up to become a powerful Hollywood producer) plays Chandler's emotionally disturbed son David. Since suffering a traumatic shock during the war, David has not spoken a single word. With his son in tow, John wanders the frontier in search of a doctor who might cure David's muteness. Along the way, he runs afoul of sheep baron Harry Burleigh (Dean Jagger), and for a brief period is forced into indentured servitude to pay a debt to farm woman Linnet Moore (Olivia de Havilland). Falling in love with Linnet, John vows to protect her land from the covetous machinations of Burleigh and his brood. It is during the climactic set-to between good guys and bad that David at long last finds his voice again. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Sign of the Otter
John Christian stars in this film as Samuel Todd, a man living in an unstable America, prior to the Revolutionary War. With the advice of an American rebel named Colonel Rose (Dan Haggerty), and the help of an Indian chief called Tekhane (John Weiner), Samuel must find the British commander (Rick Washburn) who captured his son. Even if he succeeds, he will not be able to stop the tumult that is to follow as America begins to fight for its independence. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

Harvest for the Heart
Two decades after he abandoned his family and their ranch, a son returns to help out after their livestock begins mysteriously dying. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Lost in the Barrens
An orphaned white teen and a Cree Indian boy must put their differences aside to survive when they get lost together in the Canadian wilderness. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Where the Red Fern Grows
Based on the novel by Wilson Rawls, this film follows the events that befall a young Oklahoma farm boy as he, with the help of his two beloved hounds, struggles to help his family get by in the hard times of the 1930s. ~ Iotis Erlewine, Rovi
