    Synopsis

    A Most Wanted Man
The late Philip Seymour Hoffman gives his final screen performance in this taut yet labyrinthine adaptation of John le Carré's 2008 spy novel. In the years immediately following 9/11, Gunter Bachmann (Hoffman) is a counterterrorist expert based in Hamburg who operates as a rogue agent, independently of the Grenzschutzgruppe 9 der Bundespolizei (GSG-9). He specializes in bringing down jihadists, and as the story opens, he begins to fixate on a Chechen immigrant named Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin), newly arrived in town. Issa's motivations are initially unknown, but he befriends an American social worker (Rachel McAdams) who grows convinced of his harmlessness and sets about persuading Gunter of the same. Meanwhile, Gunter becomes aware of a palpable and imminent threat to national security that involves future jihad activity, and devises an ingenious plan that he hopes will both extinguish the threat and provide amnesty for Issa. The Americans and the GSG-9, however, learn of Gunter's plot and express both impatience and a general skepticism about the scheme's effectiveness. A Most Wanted Man premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

This was based on a John le Carre' novel and isn't a fast paced new-style Bond movie. The story gives some idea of the behind the scenes bureaucratic decision making going on in the world of "espionoge." I thought the movie was well crafted. The acting was really top-notch (well save for some "accent" work) ... this was one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's last movies and he really owned this role. Got it on sale to boot!

We saw the trailers on this and it looked good. Watched the full movie and realized that we have lost a potentially great actor. Obviously the author of the book this was derived from is partially responsible. This movie will keep you riveted with suspense. Superb supporting cast. I must confess, I am a fan of John Le Carre' books and have always thought that Philip Seymour Hoffman's were mostly sad yet thought provoking.

Would not recommend this movie, why anyone would trust this guy to help anyone out in a terrorist scenario is beyond this writers comprehension. Movie took to long with nothing to hold the audience to want to like the main character. Hoffman's performance was mediocre at best. the character did not require much of a stretch way too manny smoking thought reviewing scenes not enough substance.

PSH brings to the role his usual talent of making the character he plays believable. The story line is ironically very timely given our current political and economic situation in the Middle East. Also, it demonstrates the role of intelligence agencies in possibly not the best light but probably more true than not. Buy it and share with friends and colleagues.

Any film with Philip Seymour Hoffman is an event but this was one of his last and best performances. A tight, no-nonsense performance with real ramifications for our understanding of a complex world it was just a superb film. Not a "feel good" movie but a professional and important one that all Americans should see.

What a great spy thriller this movie is. Not just the story but to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman in one of his last movies. He is really a master of his craft. Why are the real good actors leaving us? Worth watching for the movie itself, and a must for the brilliant actor's fans.

Highly recommended version of one of John LeCarre's best spy novels. Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives the best performance I have seen by him. Intriguing plot keeps your interest throughout. In the vast desert of contemporary movie productions this one stands out.

This is not like a typical Hollywood movie. More subtle with little action, that builds slowly to a thought provoking ending. Philip Seymour Hoffman is superb as the rumpled German counter-terrorist agent caught between two governments. Drama at its best.
