    Synopsis

    Alice in Wonderland
This Disney feature-length cartoon combines the most entertaining elements of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Chasing after the White Rabbit, who runs into view singing "I'm Late! I'm Late!," Alice falls down the rabbit hole into the topsy-turvy alternate world of Wonderland. She grows and shrinks after following the instructions of a haughty caterpillar, attends a "Very Merry Unbirthday" party in the garden of the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, stands in awe as the Cheshire Cat spouts philosophy, listens in rapt attention as Tweedledum and Tweedledee relate the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter (a sequence usually cut when Alice is shown on TV), and closes out her day with a hectic croquet game at the home of the Red Queen. The music and production design of Alice in Wonderland is marvelous, but the film is too much of a good thing, much too frantic to do full honor to the whimsical Carroll original, and far too episodic to hang together as a unified feature film. One tactical error is having Alice weep at mid-point, declaring her wish to go home: This is Alice in Wonderland, Walt, not Wizard of Oz! Its storytelling shortcomings aside, Alice in Wonderland is superior family entertainment (never mind the efforts in the 1970s to palm off the picture as a psychedelic "head" film). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is the best screen treatment Alice's adventures has ever recieved and is one of my favorite Disney movies. Alice in Wonderland, based on the Lewis Carrol novels 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass' follows the adventures (and misadventures) of Alice as she wanders through the strange dream world that is Wonderland. Disney took the best of the original stories and worked a series of self contained tales into a single sotry that works very well. Alice follows a white rabbit and tries to find her way home and encounters many unusual people as her situation grows curiouser and curiouser. The Mad Tea Party is hilarious and is a highlight for the movie (although we never do find out why a raven is like a writing desk). The entire movie is light-hearted and fun and is always a treasure to watch. The animation is outstanding and still holds up today as some of the best animation in a big screen feature. Everything is masterfully drawn and the animation is smooth, fluid and natural looking. The music is superb. The score fits the action very well and the songs are all fun to listen to (and there are a lot of songs in this movie). The extras include lots of featurettes on the making of the movie as well as some classic material featuring Walt Disney himself., the one I found the most interesting was how they based the Mad Tea Party on Ed Wynn's improvised performance. Ed Wynn was one of the most brilliant actors of the twentieth century and it was great to see how he did the Mad Hatter in the live-action reference footage. The Mickey Mouse cartoon 'Through the Looking Glass' is included. There's also an interactive game with the Red Queen. The Blu-Ray tranasfer is fantastic, as is usual from Disney. Everything is vibrant and clear not a trace of defects anywhere. Disney has given us yet another flawless HD experience. Alice in Wonderland is perfect family viewing. Adults and children can enjoy this movie. An essential addition to any Disney fan's collection.

VIDEO: This 60th Anniversary Edition of `Alice in Wonderland' debuts on Blu-ray with a MPEG-4 AVC 1080p encode. The film can be viewed in its original aspect ratio or with DisneyView, a feature which allows you to fill the black bars with beautiful and unique borders by veteran Disney artist Michael Humphries. The film looks absolutely beautiful in high-definition. The animation quality is amazing and it is even more incredible when you realize the film is now sixty years old. Colors are also top notch, rich and vibrant throughout. Disney has done a great job restoring the film to its original glory. (5/5) AUDIO: The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio was also wonderful (although no 7.1 like the more recent releases). It was nicely recorded and remastered. (4.0/5) FINAL THOUGHTS: This is simply amazing that Alice in Wonderland is already 60 years old. I still have the original VHS tape, plus the laser disc, plus two versions on DVD (Gold Collection and the Masterpiece 2-disc edition). But this blu ray release is without a doubt THE definitive edition of this wonderful film. This film demands repeated viewings with the whole family. If you have forgotten about the film, you will fall in love with it all over again. It will bring back many happy memories from years gone by. Also, some young viewers may think that Tim Burton's version is the original version of Alice In Wonderland. Viewing this film will introduce a new generation of young viewers to appreciate and enjoy this ORIGINAL evergreen classic. Highly recommended.

This is one of the Disney movies I was raised on. I watched it countless times on VHS as a child. That being said, I haven't seen Alice in Wonderland (1951) after my parents got rid of all of their VHS movies about 10 or so years ago. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane to re-watch this. The Blu-Ray transfer looks and sounds excellent, especially considering how old this movie is. The quality of the animation is also astounding. When I was younger I never noticed or cared about how expressive and high quality the animation was, especially Alice's, but now that I have taken animation and art classes I can really appreciate how good it is. Also, this movie is 1,000,000 times better than the modern train wrecks that are Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016). Seriously. Don't watch those, watch this movie instead.

The combination of the imagination of Lewis Carrol and the artistry of the Walt Disney Studios has resulted in a movie that will always remain a classic. Lewis Carrol wrote children's stories that refused to treat them like children, from the pedantic caterpillar to the bombastic Red Queen, to the Cheshire Cat, who admits that he's 'not all there'. Walt Disney made his movies the same way, no matter who the hero was, no matter what the threat, there was always that little edge of fear that somehow things weren't going to have a sugar-coated happy ending. That's one reason why this movie endures, it's for the children, and the child in all of us.

I think most of the films Disney made BEFORE the world starting picking them apart for racist undercurrents or secret messages are truly undying classics. The animation was top notch and now that they are remastering those titles consistently to Blu-ray standards, we can really see it. If you grew up in the 80s (or earlier), then you've probably got memories of seeing worn 16mm prints of many of these classics at school assemblies before Christmas break. The new Disney Blu's are immaculate & while memories of projected film are (in my mind) true perfection, seeing the films in their pristine original state is wonderful.

I have loved Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland since I was a kid. I remember riding the rides at Disneyland and being enthralled by the magical and often times dark images associated with this film and story. Fast forward to my mid 30's and seeing this again on Blu-ray and boy does it sure stand the test of time! Sure it is a classically old Disney film and very strange by todays standards but it is nonetheless enjoyable for kids of all ages! Looks and sounds great on Blu! Can't wait to watch it again as soon as possible!

      It's rather a PG, not a G movie

This a masterful Disney movie with crystal clear images and fresh colors. I've bought this when my daughter was 2 1/2 and she didn't like it, because she did not understand it. Although, she loved the characters she did not have the patient to watch it all and she did not wanted to see it again, until now when she's four. She has a lot of Disney movies, but this is the only one that got this treatment. But even now, she wanted me to explain the story to her. So, I would say this is a rather PG movie, but even with parental guidance a small child might get bored with it.
