Different from What's Promised, but Still Great
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Antebellum is a great movie that suffers from a misguided marketing campaign, bordering on deceptive. If you've seen the trailers, which gave very little away about the film's plot, you were likely left with the certainty that this is a supernatural horror film. Unfortunately (and rather unfairly) the elements of the trailer that make this seem like a "bump in the night" horror movie have been treated for the trailer, and are not how they appear in the film itself. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, because it's more fun to be surprised by the film, but I want to remove the one nasty surprise. It's not the ghosts or demons that you have to watch out for in this one. Much more of a psychological thriller than the trailer would have you believe, once you get past the initial feeling of being "cheated" in some way by a marketing bait-and-switch, you'll find the film is possibly even more terrifying for what it it than what you may have expected it to be. Go in without expectations, and enjoy the amazing acting, the twisting plot, and the frightening places the film will take you if you're willing to simply follow. Most of the negative reviews I've read seem to stem from people's disappointment based on the expectations the trailer gave them, and I think that hurt the film's performance a great deal. It's almost like the studio didn't trust the movie to be able to stand on it's own merits, or at least be able to attract an audience for what it actual is, so the marketing department decided to try to draw an audience by promising other than what was delivered. I wish studios wouldn't do that, because they wind up condemning great films--Antebellum included--to viewer backlash when the "truth" comes out. Janelle Monae rules this movie in an amazing performance, and the story that's actually here is chilling. Highly recommend it to anyone willing to let go of the false promises of the marketing campaign and engage with the film on its own merits.

Not what I expected, but still a terrifying drama.
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As with some other viewers, I'd expected the movie's storyline to be something other than what it actually was; the way the trailer was edited, you would expect it to have been a harrowing tale about a modern African-American woman sent back in time to a period predating the end of slavery, left to the tender mercies of powers-that-be who see her merely as disposable property. While it was a harrowing drama, I'm hesitant to divulge too many details, to avoid spoiling it. Let's just say that the big reveal near the end has more in common with the twist ending of a certain M. Night Shyamalan film (I won't say which film, though, as that would reveal too much) than with time travel. The ordeal of the film's lead confronts one with harsh realities of racial inequality, even in a present day 160 years removed from the ugliness of the 19th Century. It's a reminder that no amount of success or fame is a shield from those who see others as non-human, whether now or yesterday.

Never forget.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was hyped for the film, since it was announced. I kade the mistake of expecting one thing, but the film delivered something different. That's not necessarily bad. I would say, however into this movie with a clear mind. The twist was unexpected, although I feel like it could have been more effective if it happened later. Pictire quality wise, its beautiful looking. Audionis decent, with a great score and sound design. I haven't checked out the document yet, so i cannot comment the features. I say, get it if you ha B e it in your mind to get it. If you anything below mildly curious, wait for a price drop.

Good civil war horror movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I enjoyed this horror movie/period piece. Beautiful cinematography and very good music. Great acting. I look forward to what the directors do next. Lead actress has a lot of talent. My cheap 4k UHD plastic case broke upon opening, but the real treasure is the movie. Watch it, even if you're just curious.

Interesting W/ A Twist
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A lot of people do not like this movie, they do not get it. For me, it wasn't that hard to get. I admit the storyline could be restructured then I bet folks who didn't like it, would probably change their mind. Either way, I loved it. The Cinematography was top-notch. The story was interesting, with a twist.

A look inside of yesteryear.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really enjoyed this movie. So much so that I bought it!! I believe that thru this movie you get the tiniest idea of the hate and ignorance that was and is still going on. The lead actress was fabulous! As was the rest of the cast. I highly recommend it!!
