Synopsis

Apollo 13
"Houston, we have a problem." Those words were immortalized during the tense days of the Apollo 13 lunar mission crisis in 1970, events recreated in this epic historical drama from Ron Howard. Astronaut Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) leads command module pilot Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and lunar module driver Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) on what is slated as NASA's third lunar landing mission. All goes smoothly until the craft is halfway through its mission, when an exploding oxygen tank threatens the crew's oxygen and power supplies. As the courageous astronauts face the dilemma of either suffocating or freezing to death, Mattingly and Mission Control leader Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) struggle to find a way to bring the crew back home, all the while knowing that the spacemen face probable death once the battered ship reenters the Earth's atmosphere. The film received an overwhelmingly enthusiastic critical response and a Best Picture nomination, but lost that Oscar to another (very different) historical epic, Mel Gibson's Braveheart. In 2002, the movie was released in IMAX theaters as Apollo 13: The IMAX Experience, with a pared-down running time of 116 minutes in order to meet the technical requirements of the large-screen format. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

Well, what can I say..... I was just old enough to remember the actual event, but too young to appreciate what was happening. But since childhood I was fascinated by the space program. When this movie came out I couldn't see it often enough... and it didn't matter that I knew the ending... I still held my breath. it was (and is) in all respects an amazing achievement; brilliant cast, brilliant directing, perfect re-creation of locations, many of the technical advisors were people who had actually been part of the mission staff, a magnificent score..... this movie is thrilling. My one disappointment with this anniversary release is that I had hoped for something more meaty in the added extra, which was the primary reason I shelled out money for another copy.... although the enhanced visual quality is certainly a plus.

In 1994, I interned at Kennedy Space Center SLSTP and lived the current STS mission and much of NASA history through long time workers. One year later Apollo 13 hit the theater and it is one of the most accurate movies I have seen of historical events. It made me feel like I was back at KSC with all the human elements and historical sites. It showed what we were capable of doing so long ago. This movie brought the magic and feel of KSC. I have owned the DVD, HD-DVD and now Blu-Ray and the image quality and sounds just gets better. The Saturn V launch is my favorite show off sequence of my theater bar none. I highly recommend this movie for the human triumph and sheer movie presentation.

Had to remind myself what Apollo 13 was all about. Tom Hanks we remembered, but really forgot about the outstanding supporting cast that consisted of Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Ed Harris, and Gary Sinise. I am not sure but this may have been the movie that was a breakout for Gary Sinise. This movie seems a bit outdated with the current crop of space movies, such at Star Trek, Star Wars, and the Martian. But, it had really fine actors that were beginning their acting careers or were early in their careers. We take them for granted now but even Tom Hanks had not yet reached his superstar status at this point. Also, it was one of Ron Howards, really outstanding movies in his early years as a director.

I owned the 15th anniversary Bluray release of Apollo 13 and was very disappointed in the picture transfer. Scenes were very grainy and had a very fake 1080p HD picture feel to them. "Remastered in 4K from original 35mm elements, this 20th anniversary upgrade is apparent throughout, whether comparing screenshots or watching the film in motion. Gone is the edge enhancement, unsightly digital manipulation, and slight smearing of the 2010 release. Gone is the artificial crispness, the loss of subtle fine detail, and other side effects of Universal's previous, long outdated 15th anniversary remaster." ~ Blu-ray.com This is, for now, THE definitive version of Apollo 13 to own on Bluray. You will not be disappointed!

I love this movie because the story is true. I first saw this movie as a kid and it helped inspire me to become an engineer. Watching this movie in 4K for the first time was great. I noticed details in the background I hadn’t noticed before. In fact, the resolution is so good, one can actually tell this movie was shot on film. The grainyness (noise) of film is present but it’s really mild and I probably only noticed it because I’ve been spoiled by new high definition content.

I first watched this movie on the big screen when I was like 8 or so and it still hasn't lost its majesty. Such a well structured movie that it flies by despite being a 2+ hour movie. Chronicling a disaster in space accurately, factually with gravitas set in, great acting by all the lead actors (Harris in particular) and surprisingly good guess acting by the director Ron Howard's brother! A moving soundtrack accompanying makes this a must-see inspiring film of the human condition coping with enormous odds against its survival.

I already have the 15th Anniversary Edition of Apollo 13 and was very happy with that release. 5 years later, Universal Studios treats us with an even better version of this awesome movie. The 20th Anniversary Edition gives us a far more superior 4K transfer for perfect picture quality, a DTS-Master Audio track, and an additional bonus featurette called "Apollo 13: 20 Years Later" If you still have the old version of this film, or don't have this film in your collection at all, this 20th Anniversary Edition version is the perfect one to get.

Apollo 13 is an entertaining dramatization of the actual Apollo 13 mission. The acting throughtout the movie is good, but not great. I like that the movie brought in the family reaction to the situation, but I don't think that part of the story was particularly well developed. I do like that the engineers on the ground were given their just dues. Although astronauts undergo rigorous training and know a fair amount themselves, the engineers at ground control saved the astronauts' butts. I, as an aerospace engineer, like that the movie featured that. Overall I give it 4 stars: entertaining and well put together, but not as superb as some films.
