- A: AnswerThe only difference between the S33 and SB8200 is the presence of a 2.5Gbps ethernet port on the S33 modem (hence S33 is a future proof modem and would work with multi-gig speed tier subscription from your service provider)

Q: QuestionDoes this modem update software automatically or it needs to update software manually.(3 answers)
A: AnswerUpdates are automatic and cannot be done manually. The Cable Operators (MSOs) have complete control of what cable modem/gateway hardware they will allow installed and the firmware it uses, on their cable plant. This means anything directly connected to the cable plant (COAX) in your house. They do this to ensure that nothing happens to anyone upstream from your connections. Cable Operators follow the DOCSIS Specifications that control this methodology of firmware upgrades as well as providing security for the firmware upgrades. Cable Operators also run both the products and firmware through their own test cycles to approve any manufacturers’ modems, wireless gateways, and the associated firmware updates for deployment. This is not an ARRIS only implementation, but the required implementation of any cable device manufacturer. After an MSO has tested and approved a new version of firmware for a cable device, they will then “push” that new firmware out to the devices.Answered by ARRIS SURFboard Team

- A: AnswerCheck compatible devices at https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices/. The S33 is listed as a supported device. It's modem only, so it doesn't replace the gateway that includes a wifi router.

- A: AnswerNo, S33 does not have an inbuilt Wi-Fi router (it is a cable modem only), you would need a separate wifi system to avail the wireless functionality. S33 is capable of supporting a maximum throughput of 3.5 Gbps (one 2.5Gbps port + one 1 Gbps port). Note that in order to utilize the 2 ethernet ports simultaneously, you would need to have subscription to an additional IP address form your service provider

- A: AnswerYes it will I’ve had it on for a month now. I had panicked at the store and discovered it came out in a Spectrum approved devices list updated in Sept 2020. The modem is pretty new

Q: QuestionThere are no instructions, please provide on how to install(3 answers)
A: AnswerThere are real instructions, past the enclosed quick-start guide, but you must download them. If you're on Comcast/Xfinity, they will need to be contacted for provisioning, and they must upload a bootloader file. If you use the 2.5 GB port on the back, and that port isn't working, it's because the person on the phone uploaded the wrong bootloader... they were trying, but really didn't have a clue. Hope this helps.Answered by frolix8
- A: AnswerThe 2.5Gbps speed is due to the 2.5Gb port available on this product. The speed of the device is rated for higher than 1Gbps plans by service providers. The download and upload speed is based on the service tier with your service provider, but DOCSIS 3.1 (as supported by this product) supports higher download and upload speeds.

It works
Replaced an old Motorola docsys 3.0 modem that Comcast no longer supports. Noticed immediate improvement in speed with streaming. No more artifacts and poor resolution. Also improved my MoCA setup. I think could be faster but Comcast caps the speed. Very small compared to my old modem. Setup was very easy. Was able to get it working and activated from my phone within minutes and no need to call which was great.

Good solid modem, but runs very hot
Works great on Spectrum internet. It was hard to tell with the ISP-provided modem if a problem was signal related (inside or outside) because it didn't give us access to the modem's internal management page, so I bought my own modem. We currently have 500 mbps service and it works fine at those speeds. If we ever increase our plan to higher speeds, I expect this modem to work properly at gigabit speeds as well. The only downside to this modem is that it runs very hot. This is not a one-off issue with my modem; Reddit is full of discussions relating to heat with this modem. Ultimately, I placed an 80mm USB fan above it blowing down on it and it lowered the internal temperature by about 30 degrees (from about 120F to 90F). It seemed to run fine without the fan (no dropouts or speed degradation), but 120F is pretty hot for electronics, especially when sitting in open air on a shelf. At that temperature, I'd expect it's life to be shortened so I provided active cooling. I think if they could add a fan near the top of the device blowing up and out, it would make a huge difference. The case, as it is, has poor ventilation. Adding vent holes to the side of the cabinet would be also likely provide better ventilation and cooling.
