In a world where the airways seem to be ruled by uninspired and badly dubbed anime, Nickledeon has created something truley amazing. A show that both kids and adults can enjoy, complete with tremendous voice acting, fantastic animation, good music, and awesome execution. Season One of Avatar begins with a war going on between nations who control different elements through techniques called 'bending'. There's the Fire Nation, which, under Fire Lord Ozai, is attempting to take over the rest of the world. The Avatar, the only one who can control all four elements, is supposed to stop power imbalances between the nations, but the war started 100 years ago and the Avatar hasn't been seen since. And with the airbenders already wiped out and the water tribes being composed of tiny populations, only the great Earth Kingdom remains intact. What makes this show great is a combination of character and plot. The characters aren't stereotypical. They act in predictable ways sometimes, but then there are episodes that really show their deeper sides (The Storm, The Fortune Teller, and The Blue Spirit are all examples of this.) The story focuses around the main characters Sokka, Katara, and Aang, the Avatar (returning to the world after being incased in an iceberg for 100 years.) There's also the Fire Nation's General Iroh, Price Zuko (a banished prince trying to regain his honor by capturing the Avatar) and Admiral Zhao. However out of these characters only Admiral Zhao seems truley evil. Zuko and Iroh however are in the gray. There's some fantastic fight scenes in this series. The Blue Spirit, Jet, and Bato of the Water Tribe are all episodes with incredible choreography. Animation is top notch. There was only one episode where it went down a little. And finally the Season Finale is really well done and filled with mythology about the spirit world which the Avatar must learn to communicate, as well as he must learn to master the four elements to defeat the Fire Lord. As good as Season One is, it's inferior to Season 2. If you thought that the Earth Kingdom was portrayed as the good guys and the Fire Nation are the only ones with bad leadership, Season 2 may change your mind. However as a first season of a show Avatar succeeds incredibly well. Recommended to people of all ages. There's some corneyness in a few episodes, but the series does a great job of catering to all ages.

      Worth the moneybend

Warning: This is the first "book" in a set of 3. If you like it just as much as most you'll want to buy the rest of all episodes. In this first of 3 "books" you will see some of the main characters in this TV series but not all. Not seeing all of the main characters is only one of the many ways the series draws you into watching them all. The story is simple, but the background is extensive enough to support it well. Any holes or inconsistencies found in this series can easily explained with of your own wisdom, imagination, or skillful discounting. This show is intended for a younger (12-ish) audience but plays mature enough for kids of all ages. This is one parents won't pain to watch with their children. Those that don't know this series' popularity merely needs to search the internet using the series title to see how extensive the audience is and how much they adore this series. I don't need to mention any story details as all of this can be found using the usual sources (e.g. wiki). This first "book" is mostly about introducing the story and the environment in which the story is placed. It is drawn very well. The characters are very well voice acted. The music does a good job of supporting the environment of the story and conveys the feeling of the unfolding events extremely well. Although the series centers itself around fighting there is no gore and the protagonist always avoids violence throughout the story. Don't think twice about getting this, the story is good and very re-playable.

      Glimpse of USA animation potential

Avatar is a stark contrast to any other cartoon Nickelodeon has undertaken. While most US cartoons in general tend to focus on laughs and zero storyline, Avatar takes inspiration from Anime story telling and melds it with US style story telling creating a thoughtful storyline that rarely leaves the audience on cliffhangers like its Japanese cousins. The show takes itself more seriously and isn't afraid to include drama and romance along side of action and comedy. A great example that animation isn't just Mickey Mouse or Sponge Bob but another medium of story telling that more often then not, can only be told through animation. A great series that kids will love for the action and jokes; and adults can enjoy for fairly deep character growth, storyline, and overall quality.

Greatest animated show of the past 10 years.

I don't throw around this praise lightly - but this is one of the best animated shows every created. It blends humor, action, and drama together in this near-perfect blend that will appeal to virtually any age group. It's sad how there aren't many animated shows out there with the quality that you see here (unfortunate as well that the live action movie completely butchered it). If you're a fan of the show, it's a no-brainer to buy this. If you're not a fan, give a few episodes a try and see if you're hooked (as I was).

This is one of the best animated shows I have ever seen. Everything about Avatar is great. The animation, the characters, and the storyline keep you entertained. There is a great balance between action and comedy so when you're not watching an intense fight seen, you're laughing. The show even teaches you valuable lessons in a non-preachy way. The only problem is that you might get hooked on the show and you won't be able to stop watching. In the end, I would recommend this show to anyone, not just young children.

I had many favorite shows growing up, this was one of them. 6 discs to the set. 5 of the discs contain the episodes. 4 episodes per disc. Special features on every disc, with the 6th disc focused on nothing but special features. All these features focusing on the different aspects that went into making the series. If you're a fan of animation, humor, drama, and even action-based shows, this is a must-have set. Same if you were a fan of the show when it heired, as I was. The other two books are must-haves as well.

      Much Better than Expected!

I bought this DVD set after having it recommended by a family member and was pleasantly surprised! It is not your typical animated cartoon with flat characters and a flopped plot. It brings in a good storyline and carries it through the whole set. The creators made it easy to relate to the characters and get pulled into the story. I found myself more than enthralled after watching just the first disc! By the time I was finished I was hunting for the next installment in the series!

An American animation series done in the style of Japanese anime art. Being an animator and a kung fu martial artist, this show really hit home and caught my interest. There's not much more I can say except that if you haven't seen it yet, then GO SEE IT! It is a spectacle, the story is amazing, the artwork is super well done, and the extras showing the behind-the-scenes animation and art work, something us artists love to watch, is something to behold.
