    Synopsis

    Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Director Tim Burton brings his unique vision and sensibility to Roald Dahl's classic children's story in this lavish screen interpretation. Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) is the secretive and wildly imaginative man behind the world's most celebrated candy company, and while the Wonka factory is famously closed to visitors, the reclusive candy man decides to give five lucky children a chance to see the inside of his operation by placing "golden tickets" in five randomly selected chocolate bars. Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), whose poor but loving family lives literally in the shadow of the Wonka factory, is lucky enough to obtain one of the tickets, and Charlie, escorted by his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly), is in for the ride of a lifetime as he tours the strange and remarkable world of Wonka with fellow winners, media-obsessed Mike Teavee (Jordan Fry), harsh and greedy Veruca Salt (Julia Winter), gluttonous Augustus Gloop (Philip Wiegratz), and ultra-competitive Violet Beauregarde (Annasophia Robb). Over the course of the day, some of the children will learn difficult lessons about themselves, and one will go on to become Wonka's new right hand. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also stars Christopher Lee, James Fox, and Noah Taylor; the book was famously adapted to the screen before in 1971 under the title Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with Gene Wilder as the eccentric candy tycoon. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Offers A New (And Terrible) View of the Story

I love Johnny Depp. I love Tim Burton. But I absolutely HATE this movie. I wanted to give it a chance, even though I felt it was unnecessary ("Willy Wonka" is a classic). But it was just TOO weird. The feel of it wasn't right. Where Gene Wilder was offbeat and funny, Johnny Depp was just...creepy. The back-story about Willy Wonka's dad was so not needed. The kids did a good job, but the fact that Veruca Salt didn't sing the "I Want the World" song takes this movie down more points for me (my favorite scene in the original). And the only GOOD points of this movie can be found in the original. All in all, new technology does NOT make a better film. See the original. Forget this one. By the way, the Oompa Lumpas are not nearly as cool as they were in the original. They're kinda stupid in this one, actually.

My son recommended this. It is a more updated version of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and there are some things that are better. The music by the Oompa Loompas is still pretty weird...but all in all...a fun movie to watch. Johnny Depp is the perfect Willie Wonka. (But not sure he truly surpasses Gene Wilder)

Some things just weren't made to be messed with. At least in this case, but maybe I'm just biased to the original because I remember seeing that as a kid. Anyway my daughter also loves the original and only on rare occasions will watch this version. Didn't enjoy Depp's take on Willy Wonka but I'm sure others love it. Bought it at a decent price can't complain.

Tim Burton's stylized grim fairytale adaptation of Willy Wonka has exuberant kitsch sets and his usual piercing look at the underside of our suburban lives. I found my ride of the lottery for the golden tickets to the tour of the chocolate factory to be visually rewarding. Blu-ray disc, packaging, picture and sound quality good. Presented in 185:1 aspect ratio.

      Very Thrilling for Children

It was thrilling and entertaining. Even though this movie didn't relate to the book and so much different from the original movie, it was still a great movie. The storyline was not well scripted, but the actors did a great job. The costumes were creative, and the music and stunts that occurred was superb. The kids love this movie which is the most important thing.

I have loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for many years now. It is a movie I never get tired of watching over and over again. I'm surprised that it took me this long to finally purchase the Blu-Ray version of the film. It truly offers a whole new viewing experience so I can love it all over again! I am truly happy with my purchase!

      Strange & Twisted

Based off the Roald Dahl childrens book, This twisted and bizarre remake of the 1971 classic film, and directed by Tim Burton, is extremely poor. A relatively good cast and production team goes to waste here. Stick with the infinitely better 1971 version starring Gene Wilder and titled 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.'
