Competent AIO Dell Desktop for Most Users
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Display, Ease of useI did not think I’d like it, but I do! This model I5490-7234SLV-PUS Dell Inspiron 23.8" Touch-Screen All-In-One with 10th generation Intel Core i7, 16GB Memory and 512GB SSD is reviewed on behalf of Best Buy. The price is $1200 as of 12-25-19. Look for a price drop soon. I’m an Apple-preferred computer user since way back in 1980, though I have had numerous Windows-based PCs all along. I thought it appropriate to check out this new model rig through the lens of an irregular Windows user, and I am glad I did. What’s Hot • All-in one design – it’s all inside the monitor; clean and neat • Top-of-the-line 10th Generation Intel quad-core mobile i7 processor, their latest generation low-power and zippy processor for good energy efficiency • Maxed out with 16 GB RAM • Air cooled, so no fan to make noise • 23.8" Full HD touch screen with anti-glare matte finish • Intel UHD Graphics 620; integrated graphics card for casual gaming, capable of HD, not 4K video, shares the computer’s memory (RAM), but, good enough • Dell Mobile Connect pairs your iOS or Android smartphone with your desktop, though mirroring is available only with Android phones • 512 GB SSD (Solid State Drive) for speed and reliability; no moving parts • 802.11ac wireless technology for the fastest wireless connectivity • Windows 10 Home Edition (standard) • Wireless keyboard and mouse; keyboard has good feel, mouse, too • Pop-up peek-a-boo webcam; used for face recognition log-in, easily hides by pushing it down to stowed position for added security • Easy out-of-box setup; easier and faster than any Mac in my experience • Comes with Duracell Copper Top Alkaline batteries for keyboard and mouse • Fast startup, fast response • Bluetooth 5.0 (the latest version of BT available) • Dell CinemaSound – full, rich sound from video streaming, gaming, etc. • Ports and slots galore on the back Rear security lock slot HDMI-out HDMI-in USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C™ RJ45 Ethernet 10/100/1000 USB 2.0 Type A 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A Universal headphone jack SD Card Reader 3.0 What’s Not • *NOTHING, so far* It is this kind of experience that I like most. Going in, I was skeptical and dubious. How could a lowly Windows computer possibly compare favorably with my Macs? I love to say when preconceived opinions are WRONG. Out of the box, setup was a joy, actually fun. Clicking through the prompts, I was up and running in what seemed like no time. See the Setup and Specifications manual at https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/inspiron-24-5490-aio_setup-guide_en-us.pdf. This Dell Inspiron seems just right for MOST consumers. I like the Intel processor upgrade from earlier, slower ones. Why go for the newest and speediest available 9in this model), and not a new i5 or less? Even with everyday email and social media, streaming videos and seemingly simple tasks, having this 10th generation Intel i7 makes it a pleasure to multitask, with several things happening in the background, without choking. Trust me, the faster processor will translate into more user enjoyment of this computer for more years than one with a slower processor. That is not to say that this i7 processor is a speed demon. It is not. There are faster i7 series processors, but not at this price and not in this configuration. It is more than just good enough, unless the user is going to compose and arrange music or edit and create high quality videos. The pop-up camera saw me, learned to recognize me during setup and that was that. Waking from sleep or on a fresh reboot, I pop up the camera which recognizes me in an instant and I’m signed in. No need for a passcode, though there is one as a backup. Once I was recognized, I parked the camera back in its well. That way, no bad actors can get in and view what I have not authorized. There is no need to put a piece of tape over the lens on this camera as some users feel they must do. I am not a gamer, so I cannot tell you how well this Dell does in that department, but streaming videos is a satisfying experience. I watched a bit of The Irishman on Netflix and an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime. The 24-inch screen placed where it ought to be in front of me on my desk provides a good experience. The matte-finish screen not only helps avoid fingerprints, it is also the right thing to have for viewing without glare or reflection. This Inspiron comes with a 12-month subscription to McAfee LiveSafe antivirus software, which is likely to be a bit better than the free Windows Defender anti-malware software included in Windows. After 12 months, users can decide what to do. I do not detect a slowdown from having this software activated. Also included is a 30-day trial of Microsoft Office. If you already own Microsoft Office, you may wish to delete the trial from a computer and sign in to your Microsoft account to download your own Microsoft Office 365. If you are not a Microsoft Office user, look into whether you want or need Microsoft Office. There are FREE versions of compatible software doing similar functions as Microsoft Office applications. My picks are either Libre Office or G Suite from Google. Few consumers need the relatively expensive Microsoft Office product. These alternatives are compatible with anything you might need to do and with documents received that are from Microsoft Office products. If you are NOT going to use the pre-installed Microsoft Office trial, uninstall it with a right-click on it in the Windows menu OR from the Windows Control Panel. Uninstall anything else you know you will not use in order to save space on the 512 GB SSD. You may need the space down the road. My Dell Inspiron has all the ports and slots one could need, including and SD card slot for SD cards from cameras and other devices. If needed, buy an inexpensive adapter if you need to insert other, smaller cards. Streaming Netflix and other content looks great and sounds great, owing to Dell CinemaSound. Plenty of punch! Some purists think it best to get a computer that is not inside a monitor, not an all-in-one. I was among them. However, with the advent of reliable Solid State Drives instead of spinning hard drives, and with the more reliable computing hardware used in modern all-in-on computers, I see little reason to stick to separates today for most consumers. Why take up all that extra space? What about the touch screen? I was among the first to get an all-in-one touch screen Acer desktop computer nearly 10 years ago. Hated it! BIG, cumbersome, with touch-screen software that did not work and was not ready for prime time. How things have changed! In recent years, touch is well-integrated on these computers. However, touch is of limited value on a vertically-oriented screen. Think about it. Are you going to pick up your hand from near the mouse every time you want to navigate to click an on-screen object? Probably not, but it’s nice to have for those times you want to touch and go. I’m still a bit conflicted on this. How about you? Touch is perfect for tablets and phones. Are you going to draw with your finger on a vertical screen? Touch screen preferences aside, this is a sweet computer, so far. Once basic settings are made and you get to the home screen on any new computer, be sure to go into the Control Panel (on Windows PCs) and do all the system updates available until there are no more to do. On this Dell, there were five cycles of updates before it reported that all was up to date. In the brief week or so since firing it up, I am enjoying using this Dell Inspiron model I5490-7234SLV-PUS and recommend it to you without reservations IF IT MEETS YOUR NEEDS.

Compact and Speedy All-In-One Computer
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Display, Ease of useOne sharp and well designed All-In-One Desktop! From its sleek lines, bold white and silver colors, to its edge to edge Touch Screen display, this is one easy on the eye computer. PROS: One of the easiest computers I have set up! Boot time is fast and the initial setup was pretty quick compared to other systems I have set-up out of the box. There is minimal “excess” software or bloat ware as some call it. There is a sharp 24 inch Touch Screen display showing vivid colors and sharp details on an edge to edge display. While it’s the standard 1920 X 1080 display found on most entry screens, it is a Dell, and it does do a good job for everyday computing. The screen is dull which is helpful for not showing finger prints on a touch screen but may disappoint those who prefer a glossy screen. New 10th generation Quad Core I7 is fast, but because it’s basically a laptop low voltage processor it is limited to speed and heat build-up within the small case. It is rated at 1.8 Ghz processor, but its speed will increase when needed for short periods. I have seen its speed reach 3.0Ghz for short periods when viewing it on task manager. The fan is extremely quiet and vents out the top of the screen next to the pop up camera which is a nice touch to be able to hide when not in use. 16 Gb of ram and 512 Gb Solid State Drive are both great additions which help give the computer a “speedy” feel moving between screens and surfing the web. The built in WIFI seems to connect quickly and stay connected even through multiple sleep cycles. It does accept 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi connections. This computer takes up minimal space on the desk or counter. It fits great in my kitchen on the counter. The keyboard stores under the monitor and the mouse stores to the side. Both are cordless and further contribute to a clean minimalist footprint. The Keyboard and mouse are responsive and work without hitches. White looks great, but may be a problem for some with dirty hands. I like the availability of Ethernet, SD card reader, USB 3 and USB C and HDMI jacks. While they are nicely hidden on the back, some should have been placed on the side or front (see below) Speakers are small and neat. They sound pretty good for their size, but base is very limited. You can Bluetooth (5) your favorite larger speaker to the system if you like. Hidden power button under the right speaker edger is convenient to put the system to sleep. Moving the mouse will wake the system quickly. CONS: I wish there were at least one USB 3 jack, a USB C jack, and a card reader on the side of the monitor. Dell has done that on some of their monitors, and this system could use that feature. Having all the jacks on the back contribute to a clean look, however it is impractical. With proper design, a couple of side mounted jacks would not distract from the clean lines on this system. Overall I like this all-in-one. It seems to combine the right features and hardware to satisfy most users for everyday computing. While it’s not a Gamer System, it does do the majority of tasks easily, quickly, and quietly with minimal space needed. I would definitely recommend this device!

A True All-In-One
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Set upThe Dell - Inspiron 23.8" Touch-Screen is truly an all-in-one computer! I've had nothing but a great experience with this computer and feel it deserves 5 stars. From the start this Dell provided me with smooth sailing. I literally had this computer out of the box and set-up in less than 5 minutes. Not only is it a beautiful computer but I finally got to say bye to all the cords thanks to this device. The reason why I love this computer is because Dell has made updating and keeping your device in top shape very easy. I absolutely love the SupportAssist and Dell Update! Dell has made updating easy and reliable, this is why this computer stands out from the others I've used. Since I started using this computer I haven't had one error messages or freezing which surprised me cause I usually see an error message or two when installing software on a Windows. This computer also opened-up a whole new door for me. I have always hated Microsoft Edge because it never ran good on any computer or device I had until I owned this Dell. Microsoft Edge runs so smoothly on this device and outperformed Chrome and Firefox which was what I always used. I'm excited how this device is able to run a program I hated and made me love it. This is really important because with the touchscreen on this dell, Microsoft Edge gives you full features to use it. The touchscreen on this Dell is lovely and that's the word I found for it. You dont have to press or tap very hard and its always precise. I am now able to do things with software on a PC that I never have thanks to the precise touchscreen. So that is another door this computer opened for me. The video and picture quality is also nothing short from amazing. I am able to view 4K videos and pictures now on a PC. This computer also has a sufficient amount of ports to hook up everything needed. The speed of this computer is so impressive and it was able to do everything I threw at it. I fully recommend this computer to all, not only can an elderly person finally use a PC thanks to the touchscreen, but its also perfect for schools and students, businesses and offices, editing and producing, or as your home computer. This computer really is a gem and I know it will last for years to come with the build and all of the current and relevant hardware.

Pretty sweet setup!
Posted .Pros mentioned:Set up, Touch screenAdmittedly, I'm an Apple guy. I have a 27" iMac as my main computer. There are times that I find myself in need of a Windows PC and I figured I might as well get one that's versatile for my needs! I loved the fact that this AIO has a touch screen - something that I'll never get on my iMac, and better yet - it has an HDMI input so that I can hook up my iPad or even my Mac Mini if I need another monitor. I tested out the connection to my iPad and it was easy! I even used sidecar to extend my iMac screen to my iPad which was displayed on the Dell. Setup was a breeze. Having Cortana talk you through the process was MUCH easier than my previous memories of Windows 10. I installed office and opened some of the files that I work with on a normal basis and everything seemed zippy! All in all I'm very pleased with this purchase and I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of it!

Q: QuestionIs the RAM memory and SSD easily upgradeable?
Asked by rafael6867.
- A:Answer Yes. You can open chassis and upgrade memory and SSD easily.

Q: QuestionI bought this computer and I love it other than it is always losing Wifi connection. Each time that I go to use it I have to restart. My computer that I replaced since it was a Windows 7 computer did not have that problem. Anyone else have this problem?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer I have had this computer for about five months but I have never had this issue. My computer is in the same room, (about six feet away) from my router, which is a Netgear Nighthawk 1900, model #R7000. If possible, try to relocate your router to the highest, center-most place in your house (ie 2nd floor room) and/or adjust the angle of your router's antennas. Hopefully that helps, and good luck.

Q: QuestionIs the screen non-glare and tiltable?
Asked by WJC.
- A:Answer Yes, the screen is both non-glare and tiltable. The touchscreen has a matte finish. The screen tilts BACK approximately 24 degrees from 90-degrees-vertical, to 66 degrees. The screen does not tilt FORWARD from 90-degrees-vertical. (Measured with a reliable carpentry tool.) In other words, the top of the screen can be pushed back about 5 inches.

Q: QuestionDoes it have a webcam?
Asked by Rasa.
- A:Answer Yes it does. The camera can be in an up or down position. Just press on the camera at the top of the computer to pop it up or recess it.

Q: QuestionDoes Windows 10 include Edge and does Edge include Word and Excel?
Asked by WJC.
- A:Answer Yes, Microsoft Edge is now the preferred web browser for Windows 10. Internet Explorer is also installed, but Edge is the default. Edge does not include Word or Excel, but a browser extension can be installed to open Office documents within the Edge browser. However, any Office documents must first be uploaded to OneDrive (Microsoft's cloud) before you will be able to access them through Edge. You will need to log-in to your Microsoft account (which you will create on initial setup of the desktop) in order to access your OneDrive storage. I do not like cloud storage, so I purchased and installed (one-time purchase - no subscription) Microsoft Office Home & Student 2019 on my desktop.
