Desperado [Superbit] [DVD] [1995]

  • SKU: 4292296
  • Release Date: 10/09/2001
  • Rating: R
Robert Rodriguez brings along Antonio Banderas for his hyper-kinetic action ride Desperado. Columbia has done a decent job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The only flaws in the image include some edge enhancement and a small amount of grain. Otherwise this is a very attractive looking image that sports clean colors and even black levels. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and includes a multitude of sounds and directional effects (including rapid gunfire and bombastic explosions). This is a very through soundtrack that should make any home theater rumble with excitement. Also included on this disc are Spanish and Korean subtitles and Dolby soundtracks in French and Spanish. Sadly, this edition of Desperado includes nary a trailer or commentary track -- the DVD is purely bare-bones.

    Synopsis

    Desperado
Director Robert Rodriguez picks up where his successful independent debut El Mariachi left off with this slam-bang South of the Border action saga. Bucho (Joaquim DeAlmeida) is a wealthy but casually bloodthirsty drug kingpin who rules a seedy Mexican border town. Bucho and his men make the mistake of angering El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), a former musician who now carries an arsenal in his guitar case. Bucho was responsible for the death of El Mariachi's girlfriend and put a bullet through his fretting hand, making him unable to play the guitar. Bent on revenge, the musician-turned-killing machine arrives in town to put Bucho out of business, though he finds few allies except for Carolina (Salma Hayek), who runs a bookstore that doesn't seem to attract many readers. Desperado features supporting performances from Cheech Marin as a cynical bartender, Steve Buscemi as the cantina patron who sets up the story, and Quentin Tarantino as a man with a really terrible joke to tell. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      Really Enjoyed

Bandaras plays a gun blazing Mexican with a vendetta which is a mix of bulls eye accuracy and at other times barely is able to hold or aim correctly (all the while avoiding getting shot in some impossible sequences). The film can't seem to make up its mind whether he is a straight shot or a little scared to operate a gun. Salma provides the perfect eye-Candy balance without going over the top. Despite the simple nature of this story, it is one of the few films of recent years that I can play over and over in the background and enoy listening to. The sound track, simple humor, and style of film is enjoyable without getting too old quickly. I play this movie in the background when working late nights and it works well to keep me going without getting old and also without drawing my attention away from work. Nice film for not needing to get into the story too much, but due to one bed sequence do not recommend for children under 16 - 18.

Desperado, the sequel to El Mariachi, is finally out on blu ray and in a cool steelbook exclusive to Best Buy. Action packed and a bit over the top. Antonio Banderas is the guitar-playing, drug-kingpin-hunter in this one with Steve Buscemi as his side-kick and Salma Hayek as his squeeze. Lots of people get shot by lots of bullets. Cheech Marin and Quentin Tarantino have memorable roles as does Danny Trejo, who plays one of the bad guys (go figure). Very entertaining. The steelbook art isn't as good as some of the others but is still pretty cool. Get some popcorn and enjoy!

Quite surprising that this movie received a real cool and unique steelbook cover, and if you find it at a low enough price, the movie is likable enough to own it as a collector's item. Probably meant for Robert Rodriguez fans. The movie looks a vit sharper, but some scenes looks flat. Not much in the way of special features. Its quite barebones. The Steelbook is the only thing that is really cool.

The action and intensity don't quit in this Robert Rodriguez follow up to the cult classic "El Mariachi". I actually like Desperado better. Great acting from Banderas and Hayek, as well as Steve Buscemi and Cheech Marin. Lots of great shootouts, and well developed characters.

I loved this movie when it came out in theatres and still do. It qualifies as one of my favorites. Although it is a remake of a Mexican film, it packs a lot of action with a steady storyline. Even the subtle comedic jabs are on point. Not a family film but could be a date movie due to the love story.

The kill everybody, get the hot girl, and ultimately get all the bad guys vehicle is back on Blu-Ray disc, but this time, it comes in a pop art, limited edition steelbook case. I was a fan of this film the first time I saw it, and continues to be one of the favorites in my collection.

The best thing about Best Buy are their unique collector Steel books. To me, this movie is a classic. I have the original DVD, NOW I have the 1080p HD Blu-ray with DTS audio Plus my movie is in this great collector case (also to protect).

Desperado was made in the age of not so good plots but great unrealistic action scenes. I loved this movie when it first came out and saw it over and over. The movie hasn't aged as well but still a great movie to at least catch once plus I got the steel case cover art edition.
