Dirty Rotten Scoundrels [DVD] [1988]

  • SKU: 4360088
  • Release Date: 12/04/2001
  • Rating: PG
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and appears to be in all-around excellent shape. The image sports sharply defined colors and dark black levels, making this an enticing DVD transfer. With only the slightest amount of edge enhancement showing up from time to time, this is a winning picture that should please comedy fans. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English, along with Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround in French and Spanish. The newly created 5.1 remix is passable, if a little unnecessary. While it's always a pleasure to get a new 5.1 mix on a disc, this film doesn't benefit much from directional effects or Surround sounds. However, all aspects of the film are clear of any excessive hiss or distortion, making this a very enticing track. Also included on this disc are English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese subtitles. MGM has seen fit to include a few extra features on this disc, starting with a cute commentary track by director Frank Oz. While Oz isn't always the most chatty of participants, he does share a few anecdotal stories about the making of the film and what it was like to work with stars Michael Caine and Steve Martin. A very brief behind-the-scenes featurette lasts only moments and is basically one long trailer for the film. Finally there is a theatrical trailer for the film, and a very funny teaser trailer with optional commentary by the director.

    Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a remake of the 1964 film farce Bedtime Story. Before we got the glamorous remake of the Ocean’s Eleven movie there was another con artist movie that truly won your heart for how charming and clever it was. This movie features brilliant performances from Michael Caine, Steve Martin, and Glenne Headly. I am a huge Steve Martin and Caine fan and cannot believe that I missed this movie but it was a pleasure to watch it on its 30th Anniversary. I don’t want to give away any plot spoilers especially since this is a con artist film but I highly recommend Dirty Rotten Scoundrels especially if you’re looking for something funny with an old-school charm that mixes comedy of manners and very clever writing and brilliant acting all around. The Blu-ray looks terrific and the images or costal Europe shine in high definition while the lossless soundtrack gives you the full feel of the soundtrack as well as clearly delivering all the superb dialogue and writing. It’s a great time altogether and should be available at a bargain price.

Steve Martin and Michael Caine play a small-time hustler and suave gentleman confidence man, respectively. They place a bet that whoever can scam money off of someone, the loser will leave town for good. Hijinks ensue while each man tries to one up the other, while failing now and then. There are some potentially offensive scenes (Ruprecht), but the screenplay is intelligent and funny. The conclusion is great and fits perfectly in the scheme (pun intended) of things. The Blu-ray quality is surprisingly good for a catalog title. The picture quality is pretty sharp and detailed but not over-enhanced. There are source problems, but they're not overtly noticeable. The DTS-HD MA audio is surprisingly a 5.1 mix, but is not active in the rear channels. But the sound is clear and volume levels don't have to be adjusted when people speak (turn louder) or when music plays (turn softer). That is an irritant with certain other Blu-rays. All the extras from the DVD are here except one: The Franz Oz commentary for the teaser is missing, but the teaser is here (this scene wasn't in the movie). The con is on! This title is highly recommended if you want a good laugh.

This is just a classic movie comedy with Michael Caine and Steve Martin as the 2 con leads are quite good together with Caine playing the straight laced master mind and Martin playing the unstable understudy take on the Riviera with some Con game antics. Just seeing Martin ham it up as a special needs brother to the Prince (Caine) of some unknown country will leave you in stitches. The only way I can describe them without giving up too much info would be comparing them to Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis. The story never bogs down and moves on with a purpose with a few plot twists thrown in here & there makes this a worthy addition to any blu-ray collection. Video looks good but go's soft from time to time. Color is really good but not enough for demo material its just a better than average picture. Sound is strong and clear and the musical score never drowns out the dialog. I never found myself adjusting the volume due to sudden surge it is just a well balanced soundtrack. I highly recommend this film to those who enjoy light comedy with a dash of drama then give this movie a go!

      Caine & Martin--very funny

It's hard to beat a comedy movie with Oscar-winning Michael Caine and funnyman Steve Martin. Caine plays a wealthy, sophisticated conman on the French Riveria whose turf is invaded by Martin, a low-brow US conman. Glenne Headley plays their latest mark. This is an otherwise very good comedy movie with excellent acting by Caine and Martin. However, I had two negatives about it. Negative One: once Headley appeared in the movie, I figured out the ending which ruined the ending for me even though it's really fun watching Caine and Martin in getting to the end. Negative Two: this is very subjective and maybe is unique to me, but everyone in this movie is a low life. Admittedly, Caine only cons wealthy women who he says got their fortunes through ill-gotten means, but he's still a conman. Martin has no reservations about his victims---he targets anyone and everyone. For entertainment, I wish there had been someone in the movie who is the "good guy" or have the conmen see the evil of their ways and repent. My two negatives aside, I highly recommend DIRTY, ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.

Another great movie found at Best Buy! I saw this decades ago, and have been looking for it forever. The cast is amazing...Steve Martin, Michael Caine and the late great Glenne Headly. They don’t make movies like this anymore, with sly and subtle humor. Comedy today is so “in your face” and loud and crude, lots of cussing. This movie doesn’t need all the gimmicks to make it funny. So happy I found it at Best Buy!

A hilarious tale of two con men that meet up on a train and get into trouble when they both try to con their way into one womans heart. Steve Martin wants to learn all the tricks of the trade from an older and wiser Michael Caine, but find themselves in a bet where neither of them will see the final outcomes sly twist. Originally released in 1988 this excellent master blu ray copy brings back great memories from when I first saw it on DVD as child. Will keep you entertained (and laughing out loud) throughout. Great family movie, PG rating.

If someone said, "Pick two people to co-star in a comdey," I never would have chosen Steve Martin and Michael Caine. But I'm sure glad someone did! This movie is thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. Chemistry between the actors is amazing, and there is a great mix of jokes and physical comedy. There's also a surprise twist at the end.

This is a remake of the 1964 movie Bedtime Story with David Niven and Marlon Brando. Michaal Caine and Steve Martin were made for this movie, as well as the late actress Glenne Headley. The premise is based on two con artists who try to rob a wealthy socialite but find the target is them.
