Director Neill Blomkamp teams with producer Peter Jackson for this tale of extraterrestrial refugees stuck in contemporary South Africa. It's been 28 years since the aliens made first contact, but there was never any attack from the skies, nor any profound technological revelation capable of advancing our society. Instead, the aliens were treated as refugees. They were the last of their kind, and in order to accommodate them, the government of South Africa set up a makeshift home in District 9 as politicians and world leaders debated how to handle the situation. As the humans begin to grow wary of the unwelcome intruders, a private company called Multi-National United (MNU) is assigned the task of controlling the aliens. But MNU is less interested in the aliens' welfare than attempting to understand how their weaponry works. Should they manage to make that breakthrough, they will receive tremendous profits to fund their research. Unfortunately, the highly advanced weaponry requires alien DNA in order to be activated. When MNU field operative Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is exposed to biotechnology that causes his DNA to mutate, the tensions between the aliens and the humans intensifies. Wikus is the key to unlocking the alien's technology, and he quickly becomes the most wanted man on the planet. Ostracized and isolated, Wikus retreats to District 9 in a desperate bid to shake his dogged pursuers. I won't spoil the rest. I will say it is excellently acted by Sharlto Copley and Director Neill Blomkamp is a force to be reckoned with.. The story line is great and it addresses a lot of Society's flaws and prejudces and poverty. At first, the plot and characters in this movie seem quite bizarre, but it eventually becomes apparent that the movie is clearly and faithfully illustrating a theme which is natural to the human condition. That theme revolves around what happens when a minority group lives in the midst of a majority group, with the division into different and opposing groups being established based on their differences in ancestry, appearance, language, diet, and other cultural traits. The changes the main character goes through is shocking and unpredictable (as is the story). All in all, District 9 is an incredible science fiction film that features equal parts action and heart and works well on many different levels. The acting, story and milieu add up to a very excellent film. Special Features include: BD Exclusive: Joburg From Above: Satellite and Schematics of the World of District 9 - Interactive Map

The Steelbook art is unique, simple in an intriguing way and overall is very well done.

I enjoyed the 4K release of this Sci-fi movie. The CGI looks great all around, and the HDR makes the colors truly pop off the screen.

"District 9" is one of those movies that somehow I'd never gotten around to watching despite being a big fan of science fiction movies. I can now see why Neill Blomkamp is so revered by SF movie fans. This manages to feel like such an original story while simultaneously being a very blunt depiction of human society. I'm reluctant to say more because I don't want to give away any plot points.
What I will say though is that I'm actually GLAD that I never saw this movie until viewing this 4K presentation.
For a movie that was shot documentary-style on HD cameras, this is one of the clearest and most detailed 4K UHD transfers that I've seen. It looks closer to a native 4K movie than movies actually filmed in 4K. Similarly, the Atmos track--particularly the subwoofer channel--is extremely active and engaging. Everything about this A/V presentation helps to pull viewers into the action.
Definitely recommended!

Besides the awesome steelbook casing the movie itself on my particular bluray player (2012 model vizio) the movie literally took like 10 minutes to bring up the title screen... At first I thought the disc was defected so I returned not once but twice only to have the same problem... So I decided to try playing it on my ps4 and ps3 gaming systems which are bluray compatible only to have the same problem... The trailers play no problem but once you watch them all or choose to skip thru them the screen goes black thus me thinking that the disc were defected... But that wasn't the case at all... I then realized that each of my 3 bluray players are connected to the internet and this particular movie has a feature called "IMOVIE" or something to that affect which retrieves data from the internet and allows you (if you want) to view the movie using that feature (an icon appears in the corner of the t.v screen at random times and if you click it gives you behind the scenes info etc) which is really cool if one is interested in such... Now my older vizio bluray player does this but im sure ANY better brand of player or newer model player will not have this problem but I'm not 100% sure on that? All and all great movie and beautiful steelbook case for any collector!

In case you missed it, Neill Blomkamp's Science Fiction thriller from 2009 was both a critical and commercial success. The film was produced by Peter Jackson (co-writer and director of both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies) . The film had a very modest budget of 30 million dollars which is next to nothing in modern movie making, let alone a special effects Sci-fi film about giant, alien-prawns who've become refugees on planet Earth after their starship is unable to return home. The aliens are concentrated together, heavily monitored and placed into shantytowns where the conditions are abysmal. That's where our story begins. I pride myself on never giving away spoilers. If you're a fan of this and have already seen this on Blu-ray, this 4K version is much better in picture and sound.
