    Synopsis

    Driving Miss Daisy
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Alfred Uhry, Driving Miss Daisy affectionately covers the 25-year relationship between a wealthy, strong-willed Southern matron (Jessica Tandy) and her equally indomitable Black chauffeur, Hoke (Morgan Freeman). Both employer and employee are outsiders, Hoke because of the color of his skin, Miss Daisy because she is Jewish in a WASP-dominated society. At the same time, Hoke cannot fathom Miss Daisy's cloistered inability to grasp the social changes that are sweeping the South in the 1960s. Nor can Miss Daisy understand why Hoke's "people" are so indignant. It is only when Hoke is retired and Miss Daisy is confined to a home for the elderly that the two fully realize that they've been friends and kindred spirits all along. The supporting cast includes Esther Rolle as Miss Daisy's housekeeper and Dan Aykroyd as Miss Daisy's son, Boolie (reportedly, playwright Uhry based the character upon himself). Driving Miss Daisy won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actress (Jessica Tandy), Best Screenplay (Uhry), and Best Makeup (Manlio Rochetti). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is simply a wonderful film! The performances by Jesica Tandy, Morgan Freeman, Dan Ackroyd and Esther Rolle are top-notch. The pace of the film is magnificent; there is not a dull moment in the entire one and a half hours. The set is lovely and period correct, as is the music and even the automobiles (mostly vintage Cadillacs). The chemistry between the two lead characters is very special, and Jessica Tandy certainly deserved the Academy Award for her performance. It is wonderful to see the progression over the period of several decades, and the friendship that develops between a proud, old Jewish widow and her newly appointed chauffeur. Dan Ackroyd as Miss Daisy's son is surprisingly effective also. An all round gem of a movie that deserves to be seen again and again.

I have always really enjoyed this film. Took me long enough to get it on DVD. Glad to have it widescreen. A heart warming story between Daisy & Hoke. It deserved the Best Picture Oscar as did Jessica. MORGAN SHOULD HAVE WON BEST ACTOR, HE DESERVED IT. Dan, got an Oscar nomination as well. 1989 with this & "Ghostbusters 2", his career just basically stopped right there. Never had another hit film or TV show. In these old fashion, GLAD THEY STOPPED MAKING THESE, CARD BOARD DVD holder. I have ALWAYS hated these things. OK extras on it Film needs a new DVD release.

Excellently portrays the relationship between a retired school teacher and her black driver during the civil rights movement. Characterizations of that era, from set design to costumes are extraordinary. Dan Akroyd proves his acting chops, and Morgan Freeman is, as expected, believable and character driven. Jessica Dandy excels in her character of a wealthy Jewish woman coming into realization that the world needs to change, and becomes does her best to change with it. Excellent movie.

Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy, and Dan Aykroyd are great. This is Freeman's breakthrough film that placed him, justifiably so, in the top rank of film actors. The entire cast is great with kudos to the three leads. This is a top notch production all the way. The Blu-ray looks and sounds *great* -- better than in the film's theatrical run and better by far than any previous home video release. For story and character development -- this is a top notch film.

This movie touches the heart in a way that many others seem insincere. The writing, staging, costumes of the time and production in general was wonderful. Again, the condition of the DVD was outstanding, neatly packaged and easy to use. The mailing packaging could have been more substantial. I was fearful of what I might find because of the way the package was "stuffed" into my mailbox. However, as it turns out...it arrived in excellent condition.

Naturally will you want to watch this movie to the end because of Morgan Freeman. It does get a bit slow in parts and the old woman is frustrating but eases up and a little predictable. All in all it's entertaining and good ol movie.

I was glad to find this DVD. It is such a heartwarming movie. Segregation in the deep south was pretty nasty, but it put everyone though a lot. A must see film.
