Assembling your electric bicycle.

Assembling an e-bike can be a challenge. As a starting point, you can review the instruction manual. If you are more of a visual learner, search our site for the model you purchased to find the product detail page. There, you will find an instructional video showing how to put together your e-bike.
Pedal assist and throttle controls on handlebars

Get rolling on your electric bike.

An e-bike’s power stems from an electric motor and a battery. Power is activated by pedal assist and/or a throttle valve.

For e-bikes with pedal assist only, you need to first turn it on. Then, pedal assist is activated when you begin pedaling. There are different levels to pedal assist, so you can adjust the levels until you reach the level best for you.

Class 2 bikes feature both a pedal assist and a throttle. For most Class 2 bikes, you cannot activate the throttle unless you start pedaling. To engage the throttle, first turn on pedal assist. Then you can engage the throttle.

Before and after your electric bicycle ride.

You’ll get more enjoyment from your e-bike if you keep it in good working condition. Check each of these parts before and after each ride to help keep it on the road.

  • Tires: Are they properly inflated?
  • Brakes: Are the discs bent? If so, they may require replacement.
  • Handlebars and seat: Are they still tightly attached to the frame?
  • Motor: Is there any accumulated dirt or debris?
  • Battery: Is it charged?

Electric bicycle laws in your state.

Before you take your first ride, you’ll want some familiarity with your state’s e-bike rules and regulations. For instance, some states do not allow certain classes of e-bikes on trails and bike paths. Each state also has important laws regarding helmet use, licensing, insurance and more. Safety gear and accessories.

Woman and man wearing helmets while riding bicycles

Bicycle helmets.

If you haven’t yet bought a helmet to protect your head, now is the time to do so. A multidirectional impact protection system (MIPS)-equipped helmet includes a thin layer of plastic that allows for additional absorption of energy during a crash, which protects the head. Best Buy carries an assortment of helmets with MIPS technology.
Man locking helmet and bicycle

Locks, lights and GPS.

A lock is a must to protect your e-bike investment. The main types are cable locks and U-locks. U-locks tend to be heavier than cable locks but offer greater theft prevention. Cable locks are more convenient and can sometimes secure multiple bikes. On the other hand, determined thieves may have an easier time cutting through or breaking the cable.

If you plan to ride at night, you will want a light for your own visibility and so other vehicles can see you. We carry an array of front lights and wheel lights. A GPS unit is helpful if you’re planning rides to unfamiliar places.

More accessories for e-bikes.

Once you’ve protected your head and your bike, consider picking up a phone mount so you can follow directions while maintaining control of your bike with both of your hands.

We also carry a variety of bags so you can easily carry your belongings while riding.
