Synopsis

Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo is the third installment in a film series known as the Rebuild of Evangelion that reinterprets the story first told in the critically acclaimed anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Covering the material from the episodes 7-18 of the series but also including completely new storylines, as well as the new character Unit-05 pilot Mari Makinami, the film opens as Maki and Asuka are sent into Earth orbit to rescue Shinji, who is later fitted with an explosive collar by WILLE, the organization bent on destroying NERV. ~ Cammila Collar

"Wat." Is the operative word the first time you watch 3.33. As a preface, I'm going to TLDR this review to death. I will strive not to SPOIL things, but be advised that it's impossible to talk about the franchise and not spoil things from the 1995 OVA series. First off, Anno told us from the begging that the Rebuild was going to change midway through it's four film release, and it does, wildly! Second of all, the first two films of the rebuild stick pretty close to the original's storyline, which makes 3.33 a new trope for directorial tangents. Nothing in 3.33, aside from the inclusion of most cast members and about three or four plot devices remains the same from either the original broadcast or the 2 movies. So if you loved End of Evangelion or the original show, you WILL be heartbroken with 3.33. But don't lose hope! This iteration of the rebuild is glorious. The action is over the top intricate detail after detail. 2/3's of the movie are devoted to fight scenes. 2 freaking 3rds! The plot follows a similar pattern to what's being attempted all along; Gendo is working under the guise of SEELE to implement the Human Instrumentality Project, Misato questions the aim of Nerv since surviving previous calamities, Shinji seeks to find himself in a world of despair, betrayal, manipulation and abandonment. Those are as Eva as you can get and shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. It's the storyline of 3.33 that's going to drift dramatically from canon. Pull-off the nostalgia goggles, realize that the original run was hampered by Anno's depression and budgetary constraints, watch the film and wait patiently another four years for 4.44's conclusion to land before dismissing this entry in the rebuild. Picture is nearly flawless. With a few artifacts during one or two fight scenes involving polarizing colors, and a few micro-banding issues during some dim lit sequences, the visual portion of 3.33 is mesmerizing. Blu-ray is the only way to watch this movie. Audio is a problem in this entry for several reasons. Normally my speakers are on 10-12 to hear dialogue. I had to turn the volume up to 23 to hear things clearly! There's really quite moments during playback, especially concerning Shinji mulling his dilemmas over. Then there's explosive bombastic moments during outbursts and action. The result is a juggling of volume controls, something that the other two movies have an issue with as well. I'm hoping one day that anime will be coded with decent audio options for 2.0 stereo AND 5.1 surround, but not in this entry. The special features in this outing are poor. There's 14 different trailers for the movie, there's one decent featurette showing the production process of sketches, to rushes, to finalizations of the film. Then there's previews for other Funimation works. This is pretty standard, but they're missing the voice actor narrations that we had in 2.22! It would also be nice to see interviews with Anno, as he's the visionary mastermind behind Neon Genesis Evangelion. They did include something very nice with this entry, a small full color booklet showcasing the official artwork of the characters, evangelions, angels, weaponry, and other elements of the movie. Also, the cover jacket is a beautiful matte finish seafoam green cover that fits the disc cover and booklet quite nicely. Finally, and this is why I give this movie a 3 stars, the controversy surrounding 3.33. The movie premiered in Japan in November of 2012. It was released in North America on February 2nd, 2016. Read that again!!! This is beyond unacceptable. It was milked in theatres at the end of 2013 of various anime conventions, so Funimation decided to halt it's retail release. Then it was delayed a second time to dub the entry, slated for a 2014 release, which mysteriously stopped over night. A third delay occurred when Funimation posted a message on their website stating that Studio Khara wanted to redub the entry so that it followed more closely to the original Japanese script. In the later part of 2015 we were told that the movie would release at the beginning of 2016, a full three and a half years from the original's release AND after the holidays. I've watched this movie backwards and forwards three times straight, along with scanning every possible inch of the special features and nowhere is there an formal apology by Funimation or any of the production studios for the constant delay of this movie! A similar event happened with End of Evangelion back in the early 2000's but this is 2016! Entire series get released within three years! Inexcusable. The movie is also 30 minutes shorter than the previous rebuilds and winds up giving us more questions than answers with the new storyline twists. So you have a movie that differs greatly from the canon of the series, has poor audio with great video, and took close to 4 years to release stateside for you could read this review. 3 out of 5 is generous, and if it wasn't Evangelion it would be a 1. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to complete their Evangelion Rebuild collection, or anyone who wants to hang on for the wild ride that the rebuild of the series has set up. I would avoid it like Plutonium for anyone who is a stringent lover of the originals, or anyone who hasn't fallen in love with the newer styles of anime fanservice delivery, hates production postponements, or wants more bang for their buck.
