    Eyes Wide Shut
The final work of legendary director Stanley Kubrick, who died within a week of completing the edit, stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, at the time Hollywood's most bankable celebrity couple, and was shot on a open-ended schedule (finally totaling over 400 days), with closed sets in London standing in for New York City. Cruise and Kidman play William and Alice Harford, a physician and a gallery manager who are wealthy, successful, and travel in a sophisticated social circle; however, a certain amount of decadence crosses their paths on occasion, and a visit to a formal-dress party leads them into sexual temptation when William is drafted into helping a beautiful girl who has overdosed on drugs while Alice is charmed by a man bent on seduction. While neither William and Alice act on their adulterous impulses, once the issue has been brought into the open, it begins a dangerous season of erotic gamesmanship for the couple, with William in particular openly confronting his desire for new sexual experiences. What didn't make the final cut of Eyes Wide Shut may have been as fascinating as what finally appeared on screen: Harvey Keitel was replaced almost immediately by Sydney Pollack, while Jennifer Jason Leigh was replaced by Marie Richardson after she had shot all her scenes and left town. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      Kubrick's final film

Stanley Kubrick's final movie gained much publicity for its use of then-marrieds Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman as the leads and for its suggestive overtones. Further notoriety was generated when Kubrick died about a week after filming finished. This is not an erotic story, but rather a story about marriage, specifically the one between Bill (Cruise) a doctor and his unemployed wife Alice (Kidman) who, after going to a Christmas party a wealthy friend (Sydney Pollack) is throwing bring out their frustrations & desires into the open. This prompts Bill to go out on his own at nights and commit acts that push his marriage to the moral edge. The only drawback of the film is that Kidman was somewhat underused. Fortunately, the scenes with her (including the final one where she says the film's final line) are great. This film may have, in a way, paved the way for other films like Closer & Match Point and its ending is not what you'd expect.

      Kubrick's final masterpiece

      • My Best Buy® Elite Plus MemberElite Plus Member

Eyes Wide Shut is the final chapter in Stanley Kubrick's career that spanned early four decades. Although dark and disturbing, Eyes Wide Shut is Kubrick's best work. In many ways, it sums up everything Kubrick has ever done, as it features recurring themes found in some of his better known work, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining. The slow pacing and the fluid camera movements make for a hypnotic and enthralling picture.

This is the uncut international version of the film which is what I and countless fans of Kubrick's work recommend. Beautiful, suggestive and overt, haunting, and very scary. The film affects me more now that I'm married than when I saw it in theatres in 1999.
