    Synopsis

    Fiddler on the Roof
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I was hoping this blu-ray would be as good as The Sound of Music, but it's not so. It's not a big deal because Fiddler's blu-ray video and audio is still excellent. The video quality is very impressive - sharp, tons of detail, good color. Bright day scenes really stand out as expected. While darker and/or night scenes get a tiny bit grainy (which is perfectly fine if you like grain). The video is pretty clean and spotless expect for right after the intermission scenes when some black ovals pop up on the screen (it's so quick, it's not really an issue, but they do show up). During some of the overcast day scenes with the sky in the background, there is a slight wavy effect that ripples across the sky (once again, it's barely noticable, but it's there). The 7.1 DTS-HD audio rocks for a 1971 film - totally satisfied with the work they did on the audio - clear and active. The volume does increase a bit whenever someone starts singing.

This movie has been a staple in my family for many many years now. I watched it when I was younger, and my kids watched it when they were younger, and they each have added a copy to their movie collection as they began their own. Getting it on Bluray is the natural progression for keeping this an active part of my movie library. Not sure if there is any actual benefit for image quality going bluray, but did it more so that it didn't get lost in my collection by still being stuck on DVD, as tv's get bigger and pixel count gets higher, even old movies need the upgrade to stay technologically viable.

One word. Tradition. This is one of the great Broadway musicals, adapted painstakingly for the screen. "Fiddler on the Roof" is the story of a simple farmer (Topol, "For Your Eyes Only") and his Jewish family living in the town of Anatevka in the Russian Empire of 1905. Tevya finds his life slowly spinning out of control as he marries of his daughter and finds his way of life threatened by the government's expulsion of the Jews. The songs in this film are rich and memorable, the acting superb, and the setting impeccable. I would recommend this film to both history students and theatre students alike.

A must for any fan of "Musicals" This just happens to be my favorite musical of all time. On the surface it would appear to be a simple story, but it isn't. Many different and complex stories within the main one of a family in a sleepy little Jewish community just prior to, and partially into a war. This move includes one of my favorite and timeless songs of all time, "Sunrise, Sunset."

I wanted to get this film for my collection in Blu ray. I already own it on DVD and was so happy with the clarity and experience I had while watching. It transferred so well to film. I have a few tiny knit picks with the film itself ( Hate Topol's English accent.......why didn't he work on it before shooting!!) but on the whole ....a good film.

I have owned this movie as a cherished timeless classic in VHS , DVD and now Blu Ray. When I can't decide what I want to watch this one always works. It is also an excellent choice for those decent family Sunday movies watched as a family unit. Young and old alike can enjoy as elder members instruct young ones concerning this time in Jewish history. Classic goodness.

I just turned 30 and I've loved this movie since I was 7, watching with my grandparents. Tells the story of a Jewish family living under Imperialist Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. I still own the 2 VHS tapes it came on before the advent of DVD (followed by bluray). The music really shapes the story (as it's based on a stage musical).

Decided to replace my “Fiddler on the Roof” DVD with BluRay, so I picked it up while browsing in BestBuy. Picture is clearer and I picked up details that I hadn’t noticed before. Love this movie. Saw it in a theatre in Washington, DC in 1970, and I fell in love with everything about it.
