Final Destination [DVD] [2000]

New Line has produced an excellent DVD package for James Wong's Final Destination, despite the fact that beyond its novel premise the film is just another teen slasher flick of limited appeal. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the film looks absolutely terrific, maybe as good as home cinema can get. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound is impressive on a more subtle level, but is certainly never found wanting. Beyond the so-so theatrical trailer and some DVD-ROM features, there are some fine extras on this disc. Of the two featurettes, the 20-minute study of a real-life psychic is the less interesting, although it may be of real value to anyone interested in the subject. The 13-minute look at test screenings is more compelling, illustrating with humor the enormous bearing they can have on a movie's final edit. This ties in nicely with the inclusion in the deleted scenes section of a strangely sentimental alternate ending, which was passed over after test screenings in favor of the crowd-pleasing ending eventually used. The feature commentary by director Wong, producer Glen Morgan, editor James Coblentz, and (intermittently) writer Jeffrey Reddick is mainly standard fare, but with some good insight and interesting background (apparently Tobey Maguire was the first choice for Devon Sawa's role!). The commentary by Sawa and three of the other cast members is more light-hearted but actually quite dull. A third commentary of sorts is provided on the film's isolated score, with composer Shirley Walker offering a truly fascinating insight into the process of creating music for a motion picture. However silly Final Destination might be as a film, the presentation and content of this DVD are absolutely outstanding.

    Synopsis

    Final Destination
In this teenage horror film, a young man avoids the hand of death, only to find that he can't get away from it so easily. On the way to Paris with his high-school French club, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) has a vivid premonition of the plane crashing and killing all its passengers. After Alex and some other passengers demand to be let off the flight, his premonition turns out to be true, and the jet explodes during takeoff. While the FBI is convinced that Alex was involved in some kind of foul play, the passengers who got off the flight are all dying in horrible ways, as if whoever determined that the passengers would perish is punishing those who cheated death. Final Destination marked the feature directorial debut of James Wong, a producer and director for the TV series The X Files. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I cannot recommend this Blu-ray, especially if you already own this title on DVD. The Visuals on this disc are terrible and really cannot even qualify as hidef. The image is soft and visually blurry at times. Colors are OK, but will not impress you. I sense quite a bit of Edge enhancement and some kind of filtering going on here. The newly remastered soundtrack is the only redeeming quality, with a 5.1 TrueHD reference audio track, which sounds pretty darn good, its just a shame the video didn't match up! I really like this movie, but in its current Blu-ray condition, I would steer clear of this release.

      Better than Most recent horror

This is not a great film. What makes it entertaining and worth considering to buy or simply watch is that though it is only average at best as a film, it is still miles above the current gore and torture style of horror film making. If you are someone who actually likes suspense and thrills this might work better for you than the pure gore soaked rides of the current horror genre. However, in the big picture this film is average or slightly below.

This movie is one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. Death stalks a group of tenagers; killing them one by one. no one can escape death because its our destiny to die sooner or later. i mean how these characters died was quite scary. I have nightmares every time i watch this movie.

Final Destination is a great flick to watch with a large group. Guessing which will be next to die in the most gruesome way of accidents are the film's highlights. The sequels are more for a cash grabs and very cliche.

Another great scary movie that made me jump, and thats when you got a great horror flick, when grown men are jumping because of the killing. This movie made cheating death, a stupid move if you are not playing for keeps.

The kind of movie that makes your brain stop to think. If you don't mind the graphic deaths, it's a pretty awesome movie.
