Synopsis

Flight of the Conchords, the self-proclaimed "fourth most popular folk parody duo" in New Zealand, soar to rarefied heights with a unique brand of comedy and music in their inaugural season. The series charts the low-key Kiwi invasion of New York City by Bret (Bret McKenzie) and Jemaine (Jemaine Clement), a good-natured but naive pair of shepherds-turned-troubadours who seek to kick-start their careers in the U.S. while keeping a vigilant lookout for romance. Their small but entertaining social circle consists of the group's clueless manager, Murray (Rhys Darby), who also happens to work at the New Zealand Consulate; Mel (Kristen Schaal), a borderline stalker who accounts for the band's sole fan base; Murray's assistant, Greg (Frank Wood); Mel's husband, Doug (David Costabile); and Dave (Arj Barker), a pawn-shop employee who considers himself the go-to guy when the guys need relationship and cultural advice. In addition to the band's (mostly) fruitless search for paying gigs, much of the action is driven by Bret and Jemaine's luck-or lack thereof-with women, including Jemaine's pursuit of Sally (Rachel Blanchard), which inspires the songs "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" and "Business Time," and Bret's courtship of Coco (Sutton Foster), who's on the receiving end of the comically erotic "If You're Into It." Among other memorable tunes are "Pencils in the Wind," "Inner City Pressure" and "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros." Guest stars for Season 1 include John Hodgman, Demetri Martin, and Will Forte. ~ Joe Friedrich

    Another Great HBO Show

This show is absolutely hilarious. (To give you an idea of my taste in humor, other shows I confidently proclaim to be "hilarious" are: Seinfeld, Arrested Development, The Office (US & UK), It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Scrubs, and South Park). If you are not familiar with the premise, it's two guys--Bret and Jemaine--from New Zealand that form the band The Flight of Conchords, supposedly the "fourth most popular New Zealand folk parody band." They have moved to New York City and are trying to make it in the music industry. They only have one fan and she's a bit creepy. During their [mis]adventures, they will sporadically break into song. I guess you could technically call this show a musical, but it's not lame Broadway (or off-Broadway or off-off-Broadway) comedy, it's legitimately hilarious. The dialogue is also very clever and its deliberate awkwardness creates a bond [of pity] for the characters. The cinematography, very Wes Anderson-esque at certain times (a good thing), is high quality and the music videos have special effects which range from quality to deliberately cheesy. While there are only 12 episodes, at $20, that's less than $2/show, so I'd say that it's still a pretty good deal (plus it's cheaper than other shows on DVD). I will definitely be giving a few of these out for Christmas.

This show is absolutely hilarious, I died from laughter during every episode and was sad when I finished watching them all. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of laughing. One thing that sort of bummed me out, however, was the lack of bonus features. The dvd does have promos for each episode, but nothing else. At least some deleted scenes or a commentary or two would've been nice. Overall though, the hilarity of this show makes up for the lack of bonus content, and for $25, this dvd is a bargain.

Other than Curb Your Enthusiasm (also HBO), this may be the funniest show on today. The show follows a struggling novelty band from New Zealand as they try to make it in the music business. The cool thing is that the two main guys do actually have a band by the same name, and while their songs are funny, they're actually quite good. The only thing disappointing with this season is that it only has 10 thirty minute episodes, but we can't fault the DVD for that!

I got started a bit late on this show, but once I started watching it, I couldn't stop. Jemaine and Bret are so funny that everything they venture into during the show results in hilarious songs and situations. Dry "Office-like" humor with music added in. Stars 2 extremely talented actors/musicians that complement each other very well. Quickly became one of my top 3 favorite comedy shows (The Office and Scrubs being the others). Can't wait for season 2!!!!

A show about two guys in a comedy band from New Zealand trying to make it big in New York City. The show centers around comedy songs. The songs are hilarious and the characters are great. The show is a must see.
