A: The heart rate monitor gives you your real time heart rate. It's is very responsive and does not lag with your changing heart rate. I connect mine to my garmin vivoactive, where it also gives me my average HR, lowest HR and my max HR. I haven't tried it swimming but I remember reading that it does not work submerged in water. It is water proof, it just won't transmit under water. Hope that helps
