    Synopsis

    Hellboy
Mike Mignola's acclaimed comic book series about a creature from Hades who joins the battle against evil arrives on the screen in vivid form in this adaptation directed by distinctive horror filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. During World War II, the Third Reich has joined forces with the evil Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden), who has used his occult powers to summon up a young demon from the depth of Hell to be used as the ultimate Axis weapon. However, the demonic creature is captured by American forces, and put in the care of Professor Broom (John Hurt), the founder of a top-secret organization called the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Under Broom's tutelage, the creature develops empathy and a desire to do good while his physical powers and paranormal talents are honed to a fine point. Sixty years later, the demon, now known as Hellboy (Ron Perlman), is part of an elite secret defense team alongside Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), a beautiful young woman who can create fire with her mind, and Abe Sapian (Doug Jones), an aquatic humanoid with the power of telepathy. Despite his many years of fighting for right, Hellboy finds himself facing his greatest challenge when the powerful Rasputin returns, determined to bring the demon back to the forces of darkness so that evil may finally rule the world. Hellboy's supporting cast also includes Jeffrey Tambor, Rupert Evans, and Brian Steele. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This Is What DVD Is All About

This movie is just shy of "awesome". My problem with it is the dialogue. A lot of the time the conversation and one-liner jokes just don't work. I am guessing that since Guillermo del Toro wrote the script and he speaks primarily Spanish the translation didn't quite come across. But whatever. Visually and stylistically this movie is superb. The colors that you see on the screen are bright and the lighting of different sets is done in a moody way and it all combines to make this film a visual treat. Not to mention the special effects, imaginative creatures, huge fight scenes, elaborate set and costume designs... I could go on and on. This particular edition of the DVD allows you to explore every nuance that went in to making the film. From the original four-issue comic book series that it sprang from to the finishing touches done in post-production. There are so many extras in this three-disc version that you could be stuck on your couch for at least a week to see all of them. del Toro makes far better use of the DVD medium than most filmmakers. And this is one of the best out there.

For fans of the iconic comic series where it all started, Guillermo Del Toro gave us a hard fought and well presented movie adaptation (and twice I might add!) While many of us are still hoping for a trilogy, we can at least be thankful for the two films thus far! In this new collectable steelbook edition (thanks to project PopArt), we get the unrated director's cut version of Hellboy on Blu ray. This single disk includes additional features such as: Deleted Scenes, Audio Commentary, some behind the scenes and other documentaries. Fans recognize the Steelbook artwork from the comics and that is a nice added bonus for either fans of the comics, the movies, the animated movies or all of them! All in all, a nice addition to any movie collection!

As a longtime fan of Hellboy and comic books in general, I first purchased Blood and Iron several years ago on DVD. I had always meant to try and find the second Animated feature "Sword Of Storms" but unfortunately I never got around to it. I was delighted to find both movies in Blu-Ray format collected on one disc in this Anniversary set. The price was very good for a two movie set and even the packaging looked great. Being able to get both films for the price of one is a great benefit to owning this Anniversary Edition. The voice acting, animations, story lines, and character designs were awesome in both features making them a must have for Hellboy fans and/or comic fans in general. Overall a great value for two excellent animated films.

Hellboy, as the extreme ratings show, is an acquired taste. I acquired it by being someone subjected to daily senseless violence in the community where I live. In Hellboy's SciFi world violence maintains a higher moral ground. As a Director Del Toro consistently has respect for his audience. Showing this by delivering consistently educational and entertaining commentary. Lastly, Del Toro is the master of cinematic expressions. Moments when dialogue, however sparse, visual design and action come together in one heightened memorable moment. These are universal moments where a character reaches that higher moral ground, however temporary...What makes a man a man...

Just in time for the 20th anniversary of the character's first appearance (way back in John Byrne's Next Men #21… unless you count San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2, which was Dark Horse Comics' comic con exclusive released in August 1993), Anchor Bay has reissued the two animated features that were first unleased on Blu-ray in 2007. This seems, however, to basically be the same disc just dolled up with some new packaging and a mini-comic tucked away in the case. Regardless, here's what to expect with these two animated adventures which originally premiered on the Cartoon Network

Hellboy was one of those movies that took me by surprise when I seen it for the first time. It has some amazing cinematography and everything from the costumes to acting is great. I happen to enjoy Hellboy more than its sequel from a visual standpoint and story as well. The video will amaze you with the great colors and the audio is excellent as well catching every oddity that is brought forth by director Guillermo del Toro. The extras were rather average but were a solid addition. You will be very pleased with what is brings to your home theater. I HIGHLY recommend picking this title up.

I love this flick, I love the apocalyptic feel of del Toro's vision for the events transpiring, as well as the otherworldly...er, underworldly feel for his monsters. It creates a genuine sense of dread if you place yourself in the hypothetical position. As a matter of fact, if del Toro ever decides to do a Cthulhu mythos movie, sign me up now, because I think he would be one of the few people to truly get the feeling for the universe correct!

The Steelbook Art Makes It Worth It

I already had a previous copy of this movie, but the steelbook art was so eye-catching that I had to have it. It includes all of the usual extras that the original version had. It's a comic book movie with one of the oddest protagonists ever written, a demon who is destined to destroy our world. Brought to you by the visionary mind behind Pan's Labryinth, the Devil's Backbone, and Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Tor, it has all of the visual flair you have come to expect from him.
