      Great TV that challenges more expensive brands

      We had a Samsung 55" 1080p TV that our son decided looked better with a cracked screen. Needless to say we were in the market for another TV after that. There’s A LOT to consider when buying a TV these days. Here’s the bottom line for us… Note: This review was written in November 2017 and I paid $350 for the TV. 4K or No? For us 4K just doesn’t make sense yet. 4K content is just now becoming more available. However the movies are $30 and you need pretty stout broadband to stream 4K. Also 55” seems to be the beginning point where 4K makes sense at normal viewing distances. Most the content people watch on a 4K TV will need to be unconverted to the 2160p which sometimes doesn’t go well. So while we’re all being convinced we need the newest and best it’s simply not true. Smart or dumb? I’ll take a dumb TV please. We use an AppleTV and Roku so a smart TV just has a bunch of features I won’t use and don’t want to pay extra for. Slow refresh rate? This is a 60Hz TV. The best true refresh rate you can get now is 120Hz. Anything claiming 240Hz is a marketing gimmick using software to smooth out motion (with sometimes awful results). Keep in mind 60Hz has been the standard for a long time. Yes 120Hz is better, but not THAT much better. Isn’t this a “cheap” TV? Insignia is considered a lower-end brand than others. However it’s hard to say for sure who makes the components for Insignia and even for higher-end brands like Samsung. They’re all in the game to put out a decent product while making the most profit. So how does it perform? Great so far. I tweaked the brightness, contrast, etc settings to my liking. I turned off most the fluff things that typically degrade image quality and so far it’s been great. I don’t have it sitting next to another TV but the image quality reminds me of how good our Samsung looked. Bottom line? This is a solid 1080p TV and I don’t see how you can go wrong for $350. Many videophiles turn their nose up at “lesser” brands. For them it’s Samsung or nothing. I’d be surprised if most of them could tell the difference in a blind test of multiple TVs that have been calibrated properly. Personally I think it’s a waste of money to spend 2-3X as much on a TV that has a bunch of features that probably aren’t necessary and I won’t use.

      I read many reviews from good to bad before buying this. This TV was at a cheap price for the size so I figured its for sure going to be a good buy or at least that was my original thinking. I have never bought or had experiences with insignia televisions so I was hoping for the best. When I got the TV It was huge. Allot bigger then I had thought but I was like ok nice. When I turned the TV on and started watching it I realized the quality Immediately was horrible, skipping frames, choppy, and just laggish. I went through all the settings and custom was the best with it bringing at least the colors out a bit better but was still pretty bad, I tried not to panic or get mad so I went off tweaking the settings by myself instead of the set ones and even after the best I could the quality was still horrifying. So then I went to play my Xbox one and gta V was so laggy and looked terrible and once again the quality was horrible not even HDMI cables will save this TV. Another terrible thing is this TV heats very fast and its very large so especially if you're getting this for a bedroom you're going to need to have the AC on as this thing generates a ton of heat along with the horrifying quality this TV literally has convinced me Insignia is a terrible brand. Literally I was contemplating returning but was thinking maybe it's not too bad for the price, two hours later I was on the phone with best buys geek squad because I was NOT about to settle for this terrible picture over sized over heating piece of junk. All the reviews of people saying " good picture " or " good quality " I'm assuming are elderly who don't care much about a nice TV picture or high definition or even in general a decent picture because the picture quality on this TV I kid you not is horrible to the point where you will Instantly realize when you receive the TV that you made a mistake. So after calling for the return I had an amazing helpful and nice geek squad member tell me I can swap for another TV that's with in the same price range or under and that they would come take this TV and give me the new one of my choose of course with in the same price range or under. I had originally thought let me get a Samsung 40 inch since In my opinion Samsung and Sony are the best brands and my sister has a Samsung and our living room TV is Sony. I had got this Insignia only for the price and size. The member told me It was a bit more then this and Id have to pay like a $50 difference which I honestly did not feel like since I was already annoyed with the horrifying picture quality of this 55 inch Insignia TV. So after digging and really studying I downsized for the 32 inch Samsung smart TV 1080p model UN32J5500AFXZA. The size was allot bigger then I thought it would be for 32 inch but its pretty big and the stand on it's very great for placing it where ever. The quality is also very good for TV and playing games. I'm happy I got rid of this piece of junk as it's quality is insulting even for 55 inches the price was cheap and does not make up for the skipping frames, blurry, choppy and jittery quality that comes with it. Do not buy this, look on, get a Sony or Samsung, if you do not wanna pay a high price down size it is worth it rather then dealing with this TV which you don't deserve as a buyer to deal with having such terrible quality and issues of over heating. I've had my 32 inch Samsung smart TV that replaced this for a few hours already extremely happy and has not generated any heat where as this Insignia 55 inch made my room a living oven with in only 40 minutes of watching TV on it.

      Bought this TV on sale for $330 which I thought was a great deal. I’ve owned the Insignia 40” with the same specs and was satisfied with that TV so I kinda knew what to expect with this TV. I only watch NetFlix, YouTube and stream my iPhone and iPad to the TV via Apple TV and this TV performs as expected. It even works really well as a monitor for my MacBook Pro. I would definitely recommend buying this TV if you’re not crazy about 4K, want to add your own smart TV device (that’s a great thing about this TV, it’s just a TV, no worries of the internal smart TV functions failing) and just want to watch movies or videos. The picture quality and fluidness of this TV is great, very bright and fulfilling colors without any noticeable disturbances. Have not experienced any lag or hesitations of the TV.

      Great tv


      I bought this TV for my boyfriend’s birthday. He’s had it for about 4 days now and so far not a single complaint. I read reviews on TV’s from multiple websites and brands and found this one to have the most positive reviews with the best price. Neither of us are TV experts and don’t get overly technical when it comes to megapixels and features. We’re also not idiots though, just looking for a good quality of picture and a decent sound range. This TV looks really good, details are super enhanced and the sound at just 15 was suprisingly loud and clear too. I’m so happy with it! He didn’t have to adjust anything and it already looks/sounds great. Also very happy with the shopping experience. I ordered this TV online around 11pm and the next morning it was ready for store pickup. I actually drove my car right up on the sidewalk and 2 Bestbuy guys loaded it into my car for me. Overall 10/10. Love the TV, and can’t believe it was so cheap for the quality product you’re getting.

      Considering its price I really did not expect this TV to be a good as those costing more. I was pleasantly surprised! I purchased the TV for an 88 year old woman who was trying to watch an old CRT 27 inch TV from over twenty feet away. This Insignia TV was taken from the box and basically set up in around 30 minutes. The picture was good using the factory settings. The menu system is simple and I custom set a lot of the settings to achieve what I would consider a great picture. The woman we gave it to loves it and has stated many times that she did not know what she was missing while watching her old TV. She keeps commenting about how beautiful peoples eyes look and that now she can read the banners across the bottom of the screen. I highly recommend this TV for anyone needing a great picture without all the bells and whistles that more costly smart TVs offer.

      Previous 2 1/2 year old 55 inch Insignia led lights went out. Contacted Insignia customer service and they could not have been better or easier to deal with and this was without an extended warranty. Previous model had an issue with LED inverter board. Sent a new one out sight unseen and it arrived within 2 business days. I've had this T.V. now for over six months and could not be more pleased with the T.V. or the piece of mind that comes from purchasing an Insignia product backed by their exceptional customer service. Great experience all the way around and I felt the need to write this review to thank all those involved. Bruce L.

      Alright for the price


      If you are on a very tight budget, then this tv will do. I used it with a fire stick and no cable. I watched different types of movies and shows with different apps. At first it was a fine picture, midrange. As the days went on and I kept watching it the actors faces started to turn red/pink. I changed the settings, but it was still noticeable. Then on an action scene you could tell the 60 motion rate was not enough. Also, there was a noticeable white line around the picture. I bought the tv to use in a bedroom, so I didn’t think I needed the bells and whistles, problem was just the quality. This is a mediocre tv and if you aren’t going to use it regularly or in a main room it should work. It is light and big.

      I had purchased a new kitchen set through BB and had enough points to buy a new TV. I was pleased with the value. I had some issues b/c the first TV had a bad speaker. I had ordered it online. When I ordered a replacement, with free delivery, the store associate first told me that I'd have to bring it in the bad TV b/c I had ordered online. So, beware! My personal shopper Curtis, however, overruled this rule and arranged to pick up the old TV and return it for me. (It's pretty heavy and large, so I was very happy about that.) I tipped the installers a bit so that they would screw on the legs for me. It's easy but they had an electric screwdriver that made it a few seconds for them.
