Jerry Maguire [DVD] [1996]

  • SKU: 3141193
  • Release Date: 06/25/1997
  • Rating: R
Jerry Maguire, like most Tom Cruise movies, has a wealth of fans who can't get enough of its charms. This Deluxe Widescreen Edition DVD, while visually striking and technically above average, seems to have been rushed to market. There is no original menu artwork, just a cropped image of the promotional poster and generic buttons for language, subtitles, and chapter choices. Outside of the 1.85:1 widescreen transfer and the Dolby Digital Sound, there is certainly nothing here to justify calling the DVD a Deluxe Edition. There's no director or cast commentary track, production notes, theatrical trailer, or even cast and crew information. Since the DVD is broken into 63 chapters, the chapter selection menu would seem vital to any user attempting to find a place or a favorite scene in the movie. Sadly, the captions for the scenes are rather obscure, and there are no still images to provide additional help. The additional language tracks for the movie are French and Spanish; Spanish subtitles can also be selected. A movie as popular as Jerry Maguire and one that's admired by such a large audience deserves a better DVD release than this lackluster edition.

Synopsis

Jerry Maguire
Combining drama, comedy, and romance, Jerry Maguire was a critical and commercial success built on an original script by writer/director Cameron Crowe and an Oscar-nominated performance by Tom Cruise. Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is an agent with a major sports management firm. He's enthusiastic, successful, a great negotiator and people like him. But it begins to dawn on Jerry that there's something wrong with what he's doing, and not long after a troubling encounter with the son of an injured athlete he represents, Jerry has a serious crisis of conscience. In the midst of a sleepless night, Jerry writes a memo calling on himself and his colleagues to think more about the long-term welfare of the clients they represent and less about immediate profits. While everyone around him applauds the sentiment, Jerry's superiors think his ideas are bad for business; Jerry is fired, and, rather than standing in solidarity with him, his "friends" in the firm scramble like sharks to claim Jerry's clients. At the end of his last day, the only people willing to join Jerry as he strikes out on his own are staff accountant Dorothy (Renee Zellweger), a single mother secretly in love with him, and Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a football player whose pride and arrogance have gotten in the way of his reaching his potential. Jerry Maguire earned an Academy Award for Cuba Gooding Jr.'s performance as Tidwell and provided a breakthrough role for Renee Zellweger; it also made "Show me the money!" an unavoidable catchphrase for several months. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This 15th anniversary blu-ray release of Jerry Maguire is definitely worth the upgrade from the blu-ray that was initially released in 2008. The color is richer and vibrant with the right saturation. It also comes with all-new special features that were not included in the previous release, and they include: *Jerry Maguire: We Meet Again - A 3-part retrospective featuring new interviews with Tom Cruise & Cameron Crowe *Nearly 60 minutes of never-before-seen deleted & extended scenes *Photo gallery. *Theatrical Trailer There is a lot more special features included, but will not list all on here since it is the same as the previous release. The ones mentioned are what is new and different from the previous release. What is also special about this release is that it comes with original CD soundtrack as well as a booklet with an introduction from the director Cameron Crowe himself, followed by the actual 25 page document that is featured in the film "The Things We Think And Do Not Say." Note that this document was included on the previous blu-ray release, but is not included on the 15th anniversary blu-ray disc itself since it is printed on the small booklet. If you have not purchased Jerry Maguire on blu-ray in the past, the 15th anniversary version is THE version to get!!! You won't be disappointed!

Jerry Maguire's new 1080p transfer, fully remastered in 4K, looks phenomenal. Ignoring the big elephant in the room -- the absence of a UHD release -- there's no mistaking this as a top-shelf 1080p presentation, probably about the height the Blu-ray format can reach. The image is gorgeously filmic -- breathtaking, really -- and more than just watching the movie it's a joy to simply gaze at the transfer, to soak it in, to be happy, thrilled, to be living in a time when such an honest cinematic presentation is available to view at home. Even after a decade-plus of Blu-ray and months of UHD, a transfer like this still stands apart. The combination of filmed source and meticulous 4K scan is still a sight, even on Blu-ray. Needless to say, the image is practically flawless. Detailing is fantastic. The image is lightly grainy, an accentuating grain that brings out the finest the film has on offer. Skin textures are incredibly rich and complex. There's an inherent textural ease about them, a natural, refined gentleness that finds that perfect middle ground between excessively sharp and unwanted softness. The easy-come complexity is reflective in extremely fine pores, striking clothing seams, and well-shaped environments, whether grassy surfaces or warm home interiors. Colors are beautiful. Saturation is wonderful, shades pop, and much like the details there's a natural middle ground of vibrancy meets restraint. A football field sequence in chapter seven is a standout. Green grass and gatorade cups, an orange cooler, and Cardinal red splash cross the screen in what is the most dynamic mix and color punch the movie has on offer. Even in less brilliant moments, the palette's natural vigor shines through. Flesh tones are handsomely neutral and black levels hold firm throughout. Source flaws are nonexistent, and there are no encode anomalies of which to speak. It would be interesting to compare this to a UHD release, but even without that option there's no mistaking this release as one of the best the Blu-ray format has on offer.

Jerry Maguire is a 1996 American romantic comedy-drama sports film written, produced and directed by Cameron Crowe, and stars Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Renée Zellweger. Produced in part by long time Simpsons producer James L. Brooks, it was inspired by sports agent Leigh Steinberg, who acted as Technical Consultant on the crew.[2][3][4][5] It was released in North American theaters on December 13, 1996, produced by Gracie Films and distributed by TriStar Pictures. The film received critical acclaim, with critics praising its acting and writing. The film was a financial success, bringing in more than $273 million worldwide, against its $50 million budget.[1] It was the ninth top-grossing film of 1996. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Tom Cruise, with Cuba Gooding, Jr. winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film was also nominated for three Golden Globes, with Tom Cruise winning for Best Actor, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards, with Cuba Gooding Jr. winning Best Supporting Actor.

This is one of Tom Cruise's finest performances. He plays a talent agent that leaves his agency, and tries to bring along his clients-unsuccessfully I might add, except for one football player, that puts his trust in Jerry's management skills. The movie however is about so much more than this. It's funny, touching, romantic, and is really about this man's journey through life and how one life can touch so many others. Renee Zellwegar is the love interest, and Cuba Gooding Jr is the football player in his Oscar winning performance. I don't want to give away too many details in case there are those that have never seen this wonderful film. I highly recommend it as it is full of great performances, and I think you'll laugh and cry through out.

Tom Cruise at his best... a CLASSIC! If you love this movie, and already own it on DVD or bought the previous Blu-ray release from years back, this is definitely worth the upgrade or "double-dip" in re-buying it. It leaps-and-bounds better than the DVD version and certainly outshines the previous Blu-ray release, as well. This Anniversary edition obviously went back the the original negative and did a whole new scan for this transfer. For a 20 year old movie... it looks AMAZING! With a new Blu-ray transfer, a digital HD copy of the film, a collectible booklet, AND an included complete Soundtrack from the film(on a separate disc), this 20th Anniversary edition of "Jerry Maguire" is DEFINITELY worth it!

The movie is one of the greatest ever made. There is FANTASTIC new documentary footage on this new release that makes it worth the price of the disc. I had a previous version, but upgraded because of the special features. You also get a soundtrack CD, which is currently keeping me company in my car. The manifesto that was written by Cameron Crowe is also included with the packaging. You can find this online, and it's sort of a cheap little booklet, so I wouldn't recommend getting just for that. Did I mention how great Bonnie Hunt is in the movie? She steals it from everyone else, per usual, and deserve to be a bigger star in 2017 and beyond. xoxo

"Show me the money!" You remember that!? Well, this 4K-remastered version of one the best 90's flicks, one of the best romantic-comedies ever is great! The new transfer offers "Jerry Maguire" looking and sounding better than ever. The special features are made of old archival footage, and some ported over from previous DVD/Blu-ray versions of the movie, but it's awesome having all of them in one place, in a package that also includes the soundtrack and a copy of the memo Jerry wrote in the movie. Yes, that memo - you can read it here and it's beautiful. This is one of the best blu-rays of the year already, Grab it!

Well, this one's easily one of the best flicks Tom Cruise has been in. It's nice to see him in something other than an actioner (which is just fine since he does them better than anyone else), but it's also nice to see him emote instead of blowing stuff up all of the time. It's a funny, sweet movie that he doesn't do that much of anymore. If you haven't seen it, and I can't believe anyone hasn't since it's release back in the 90s, I'd highly recommend it.
