Synopsis

Jersey Girl
Writer and director Kevin Smith embraces his warm and fuzzy side with this comedy drama about a man who learns a lot about life and love in the wake of a personal tragedy. Ollie Trinke (Ben Affleck) is a guy who seemingly has it made -- he has a great job as a music publicist with a major Manhattan public relations firm, and he's madly in love with his wife, Gertrude (Jennifer Lopez). Ollie is very much excited about the fact he and Gertrude are soon to become parents, but Ollie's joy turns to despair when Gertrude dies in childbirth. Emotionally shattered, Ollie isn't sure what to do next, and he and his newborn daughter, Gertie, soon move to New Jersey to live with his father, Bart (George Carlin), who grows tired of playing babysitter after several months. Juggling his career with single parenthood proves to be more than Ollie can manage, and one day he's fired after he bungles a major press event. Unable to find work, Ollie eventually takes a dead-end job in New Jersey's public works department, and devotes himself to his daughter as he retreats from his own life. But after frequent visits to the local video store, he strikes up a friendship with Maya (Liv Tyler), a pretty girl who works behind the counter. As Ollie finally begins to come out of his shell, he's offered a chance to move back into the music industry, but he realizes that would mean moving back to Manhattan -- and Gertie (Raquel Castro), now seven years old, makes it clear she doesn't want to go. Jersey Girl also features cameo performances from Kevin Smith regulars Jason Lee and Matt Damon, and significantly is Smith's first feature not to include Jason Mewes and Smith himself as stoner archetypes Jay and Silent Bob. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Jersey Girl was somewhat panned when it was released and I'm not exactly sure why. This was a time when it was cool to trash Ben Affleck, so maybe that had something to do with it; he had just made Gigli with Jennifer Lopez, so maybe that was part of it. But director / writer Kevin Smith is the voice of Gen Xers everywhere, and as one of those I can say that I loved Jersey Girl. Being a father of a girl myself now, the movie is even more enjoyable and relevant. Smith used his own experiences as a new father to inject real life situations into this movie, and it comes thru. None of the performances are particularly memorable, save George Carlin who answers the call as the grandfather in the movie. In all, it's an enjoyable movie that my wife also really liked.

Solid, mature dramedy from Kevin Smith

Great film from Kevin Smith, and in my opinion, his best since 'Chasing Amy'. His writing style has matured since his 'Clerks' days and it shows here. Ben Affleck plays a selfish music exec who must now care for his daughter alone. Well, he has the aide of his father (George Carlin), and with the help of a video store clerk (Live Tyler) must learn to reconcile his past with his present. Raquel Castro, who plays his daughter, delivers a fine performance for a child actor. The relationship between the two is heart-warming. There's also great chemistry between Tyler and Affleck, and they really hold the movie together. Overall, a solid flick that was unfortunately looked over during its theatrical run.

    Kevin Smith on Blu-ray

This is Kevin Smith's most derided movie, and breaks from his normally crass humor to a pg-13 romantic drama. Its still great and finally available on blu-ray so Smith fans can retire their old dvd. This was back during Ben Affleck's J-Lo period so she has some minor screen time before dying and setting up the premise of the story. I think the acting in the movie is very enjoyable. Carlin, Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck all do a fine job. Affleck, even at his worst, is still highly entertaining. Critcs were far too harsh on this movie. Not every Smith film is going to be Clerks, and thats a good thing.

This movie is totally underrated. If you're a View Askew hawk or plain ole hater, please see this again with new eyes. Kevin Smith said something sweet here without curse words and for an open heart, it rings true and packs a meaningful, selfless punch. This blu-ray is slightly better than most Echo Bridge releases, with pretty good but not great A/V quality. The extras from the DVD are ported over to the blu-ray and like most View Askew productions, comes chock to the brim full of goodies.

    Decent Blu Ray

I'm glad to have one of Kevin Smith's most hated films on blu ray. The transfer is average at best here. The extras are all ported over from the DVD and nowhere in sight is the supposed director's cut that's been talked about. Sort of a lost opportunity but still a worthy investment considering the price point.

    Bennifer made a good movie

This is a cute little movie about the love of family first. This emotionally charged movie is actually good even though Bennifer (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez) are stars, but Raquel Castro is the real star. With costars George Carlin and Liv Tyler this movie will have you laughing and crying, but have a good time watching

Not Mr. Smith's best (but even his best may be an aquired taste). Kevin's Smith's foray into extremelty mundane commercial film. Enough said. The blu-ray itself is a slight improvement over the DVD version; the colours are bright and stable; contrast is decent. I would not pay more than $5 for it

Jersey Girl is a double edged sword for Smith fans. It's nice to see him try something a little less ranchy but at the same time, it goes to show that he excels at harder material. Still, the core story here is a sweet one and for $5, the price is right for collector's of his work.
