    Synopsis

    Jesus of Nazareth
Because director Franco Zeffirelli noted publicly that he intended to depict Jesus Christ as a human being rather than a religious icon, his expensive made-for-TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth fell victim to protestors long before its April 3, 1977, debut. Despite the pullout of several sponsors, Jesus of Nazareth was aired as scheduled, sweeping the ratings in the process. In avoiding the usual overproduced Hollywood approach to the Gospels, Zeffirelli offers one of the most sensitive and reverent portrayals of Jesus ever seen on film. In the title role, Robert Powell heads a huge international cast, which includes Olivia Hussey as Mary, Peter Ustinov as Herod the Great, Christopher Plummer as Herod Antipas, Michael York as John the Baptist, James Farentino as Simon Peter, Donald Pleasence as Melchior, James Earl Jones as Balthazar, Ian McShane as Judas, Anne Bancroft as Mary Magdalene, Rod Steiger as Pontius Pilate, James Mason as Joseph of Arimathea, Anthony Quinn as Caiaphas, Laurence Olivier as Nicodemus, Ernest Borgnine as the Centurion, and Claudia Cardinale as the Adulteress. Filmed in England, Tunisia, and Morocco, Jesus of Nazareth was scripted by Zeffirelli, Anthony Burgess, and Suso Cecchi D'Amico. It originally aired in two three-hour segments, telecast Palm and Easter Sunday of 1977 as part of NBC's Big Event anthology. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Best Representation of Christ on Film

As a person who has read the entire Bible a couple of times, I will go on record as saying 'Jesus of Nazareth' is by far the most precise depiction of Christ I have seen put on film, based on what is spoken of him in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Now, this is not to say that everything in the film is perfectly accurate, but it does a stellar job of giving us an outstanding depiction in the overall embodiment of Christ. I honestly feel that, much like the Bible, God had a hand in making sure that this film did justice to Himself and His Son. No other depiction of Christ on screen even comes close to the performance given by Robert Powell in this made for tv miniseries directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The dvd is quite good and features the complete miniseries as it originally aired on television back in 1977. My highest recommendation.

This blu-ray edition has a slight improvement in picture quality over the decades-old first edition DVD. The difference is most apparent on a 4K TV whereas the DVD has no more detail than would a VHS tape. As for the missing minutes, it was a single cut comprising three significant events, two of which that occurred at the Last Supper; Peter being informed by Jesus he would deny Him, Judas being identified as His betrayer, and the third being while Judas visits Zerah with some reservation. I would recommend the program, just not this edition.

It had been ages since I had seen this 1977 Franco Zeffirelli mini-series and wondered how it held up. While there are parts of it that I wish had been handled differently, and while portraying Jesus is a challenge no actor can truly fulfill, this remains one of the best filmed lives of Jesus. Sometimes it is hard to see beyond the big name actors, but overall this is well worth watching again.

Jesus of Nazareth is a very good depiction of Jesus. It starts off when Jesus is born and goes through most of his teachings and ends in the Ressurection. It is a beautiful movie and if you don't want to buy it than you could at least rent it. Just to let you know it ts about 6 hours long, but give it a chance. Highly recommend.

Not complete miniseries as Shout would have you believe. In part 4 2 scenes including the whole beginning of the Last Supper where Peter denied Jesus and Judas betrays Him. Shout knew they were missing and has done nothing to rectify the situation. If you want the complete version get the Spanish or Australian editions.

This set contains two Blu-ray discs to hold the whole four part story of this TV mini-series from back in 1977. The acting is superb and tells the wonderful redemptive story of Christ. The video is in the 4:3 format (square) instead of 16:9, but that's due to it being made for TV before there even was a 16:9 format. :-)

Great movie a must see..i like it better than any of the other Jesus movies because it gives more details as to how things happen for example... how Mary got pregnant..in some of the other Jesus movies they start with her already being pregnant..and thats just one example there's lots more that this movie has that the others don't..
