Fave Toddler Thermometer, Accurate and Easy to Use

      Posted

Our daughter, who is 2 years old, was recently sick. Based on our experience, the Kinsa Smart Ear Thermometer is comparable to the Braun ear one that we had at home in terms of temperature accuracy but it has a lot of pluses that the Braun does not have. In terms of speed, the Kinsa wins hands down which is helpful if you have fidgety tot when they're ill. The app that comes with the Kinsa immediately tracks the temperatures as you take them with the date and time. You can add symptoms to each reading. When you choose the symptoms, Elmo's voice appears and explains in a way any child can understand what each is. My daughter, an avid Elmo fan, fell in love and laughed at some of his explanations. It definitely lightened the mood and made her feel slightly better even though her temp was a bit high still. I think once she is a little bit older, it would be easy for her to learn how to track her temp on her own and be more interested in learning about her own health. There is a manual entry option that allows you to leave complete descriptions with pictures taken from your smart phone while setting any reminders. The picture option is invaluable if verbal explanations to the doctor cannot easily explain the symptoms your child has. The app also has a resources tab that provide advice on how to soothe symptoms and what some common illnesses are (with notes on how to identify, how to treat and when to see a doc). This is helpful if you are unable to see or talk to a doctor right away. The app also allows you to capture the medical history of your other family members. It allows you to choose a Sesame Street character icon, color or a picture taken from your smartphone to be placed next to each name. If your child is not reading age yet, they can choose the correct profiles by the picture. I really like the thought that came into creating this thermometer. I think the only thing my husband didn't like was that the Braun can show you the last temperature on the thermometer but to do the same with the Kinsa, you have to pull up the app so it's an extra step. Otherwise, it hits all the points we have for a new fave family thermometer: Kid friendly; Family Friendly; Easy to Use; Speed; Accuracy; Easy tracking (goodbye, pencils and paper!). We highly recommend this thermometer to anyone who is considering buying one for their family. I received this thermometer as a gift from the weeSpring Parent Panel.

easy to use, must have phone nearby

The thermometer is quick and easy to use. It was easy to set up right from the box and the app loaded with no problem. I set up profiles for each of our family members, but was disappointed that there were only Sesame Street characters to choose from (our kids don't watch that show). I thought there might be other images, like a boy with short hair or a girl with curly hair. Not important, really, but a bit limiting. I like that you don't need a probe cover for the thermometer, but I can't see myself cleaning the tip between uses, either. And the tip is a bit big for our 12 month old, so I'm not sure if it would fit into the ear of a smaller baby. My biggest complaint is that you have to have your phone nearby and the app open to log the temperature reading onto a profile. We have three small kids, and chances are that more than one child is sick at the same time. If I were taking their temperatures in the middle of the night, it would be inconvenient to go find my phone just to record the reading. It DOES save "unassigned readings" for later, but you would have to remember which kid had which temperature. In other words, if you took four temps in the night, by morning, when you synced the thermometer and phone, you'd have to know which of the four belonged to which kid, etc. If you did have to go to the doctor, though, it would he nice to have all the data right there and not on a piece of scrap paper! Overall, it works quickly and the thermometer is easy to use. I just wish you could select which person's temperature you were taking from the thermometer, not just from the app on your phone. I was able to try this thermometer thanks to the WeeSpring Parent Panel.

My new favorite baby gift to give.

I've probably had a half dozen thermometers for my kids over the years, and this is hands-down the best I've ever used. What I love about it: - It's incredibly fast; it's virtually an instantaneous read (especially helpful when taking the temperature of a squirmy kid). - I found it to be highly accurate; I tried it with a sick kid over the weekend and used it alongside our "regular" ear thermometer. More often than not, the Kinsa gave me a slightly higher read, and with an ear thermometer, I always trust my highest reading because it can be hard to get it angled properly into the ear. - It doesn't have those annoying pop-on covers that are a hassle to change (and buy more of). Instead, it comes with a little cap that snaps on for when it's not in use. Downsides: - The app was a little glitchy; I had trouble getting it to "hear" the reading I was taking. - It's not as accurate as a rectal thermometer (no ear thermometer is -- but it's a trade off I'm willing to make to avoid wrestling my toddler for regular "You feel warm, so let me check your temperature"). You probably should still have a rectal thermometer on hand that you can use if your doc wants to know EXACTLY what your kid's temperature is, with no risk of measurement error. I got an opportunity to test this product as part of the weeSpring Parent Panel, but I found it so great that it's going to be my new standard baby gift for expecting parents.

I just received the Kinsa Smart Ear Thermometer and have been very impressed so far! The thermometer and corresponding app are very easy to set up. I first tried the thermometer on myself and didn't think it worked because the complete "beep" went off so quickly! It really only does take a second. I also tried on my two year old and it couldn't have gone more smoothly. It fit easily in his ear and the sensor is wide enough that there's no concern about pushing it too far into the ear canal. It took an accurate temperature. I appreciate that you can use it alone or with the app. The app will track temperatures and you can plug in other symptoms easily. The only downside is that I couldn't figure out how to quickly take another reading without waiting for it to reset on its own. It only takes 30 or so seconds, but when dealing with a squirmy toddler, 30 seconds can be a long time! I'd definitely recommend this product. Thanks to the weeSpring Parent Panel for sending me this thermometer!

Quick, Easy to Use, Fun Features for Toddlers

I have a toddler who has had her fair share of fevers and illnesses. That being said, we’ve tried a lot of different thermometers. This Kinsa thermometer takes temperatures ALMOST INSTANTLY – and has made taking my wiggly toddler’s temperature very easy. (The thermometer also works great on me.) Downloading the app on my iPhone was fairly easy and setting up multiple profiles was easy as well. We have tried other thermometers – rectal, temporal, oral digital, etc. – and have had mixed results. Usually, we end up taking temperatures more than once because we have been unsure of the accuracy of the results or because it took too long to work, and/or baby moved. None of these were issues with the Kinsa, and my toddler enjoyed the Sesame Street characters – complete with voices – on the app. I got a chance to try this thermometer as part of the weeSpring Parent Panel, and recommend the Kinsa ear thermometer for speed, ease of use and fun Sesame Street features for my toddler!

I love this thermometer for many reasons. For one, it is super quick! This is very important when you have small squirmy children. Also, it comes in handy when they are asleep and you need to keep tabs on a fever. The app is really cool for tracking symptoms. I have a family of five and if we all come down with something (it usually happens that way), I can keep up with everyone seamlessly. I love that it is used in the ear as opposed to the mouth. There are so many factors such as eating or drinking that can give a false reading. The only issue I could possibly see is that if it weren't inserted in the ear far enough it would give a lower reading that would mask a true fever. I also like the back-lit screen. This is SUPER helpful when taking temperatures in the dark during the night. Thanks to the weeSpring Parent Panel for sending me this thermometer!

The thermometer takes a 1 sec reading. I even took my 3 yr old's temp while she was sleeping! The downloaded app is a useful perk. When bluetooth is enabled, thermometer readings go to your smartphone. In the app, you are able to set up multiple profiles to hold history; i.e. different children. Also, you can select sickness symptoms to receive tips on how to feel better. Love this and worth the $32. Obviously this does not replace physicians or an ER visit, but this is good for worried parents that would love some immediate advice.

      Best baby/kids thermometer ever!

I have a thing with kids thermometers – I've tried them all and none have impressed me like this one. There's really nothing not to like! It's fast, simple, and most importantly, accurate! Using it with an iPhone app intimidated me at first, but the directions and set up are very simple. Plus, the app is completely optional. You can use it just fine even without the app, but the app is an added bonus! It reads an accurate temperature in the ear almost instantly, then records the reading directly to the app. The app also has some other helpful features, like individual profiles for every user, a symptom recorder, and even offers medical advice from experts. I should note that I received this thermometer as a gift from the weeSpring Parent Panel- many thanks to them!
