Synopsis

Little Shop of Horrors
It started as a 1960 Roger Corman horror comedy, filmed in two days; it then inspired a lavish 1982 Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. Finally in 1986, Little Shop of Horrors (1960) graduated into a multimillion-dollar, all-star film musical. Rick Moranis plays nebbishy Seymour Krelborn, who works in a rundown flower shop on Skid Row. While his boss (Vincent Gardenia) bemoans the lack of business, Seymour seeks a way of bringing the shop -- and himself -- fame and fortune. He purchases a strange plant from an even stranger oriental street vendor (Vincent Wong), naming the plant after his girlfriend Audrey (Ellen Greene, one of the few carry-overs from the Broadway version). Gradually, Seymour learns to his horror that "Audrey II" (given the voice of R&B performer Levi Stubbs) craves blood and flesh. With each of Audrey II's "FEEED MEEE"s, Seymour must scare up human food to satisfy the plant's appetite. One such victim is dentist Steve Martin, a leather-jacketed Elvis type (the dentist's ultra-masochistic patient played by Jack Nicholson in the 1960 original is here impersonated by Bill Murray). The lighthearted tone of the film darkens as Audrey II grows in monstrosity, but the unhappy ending of the Broadway version is avoided herein. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Finally saw this, was a disappointment

Finally got around to seeing this movie. Can't say I was very impressed. Easily the best parts of the movie are when Steve Martin is in a scene, or Bill Murray's cameo. Rick Moranis is fine, doing what Rick Moranis does (but not what James Cameron does do), but I couldn't stand stand Ellen Greene. First off, I thought for the first few minutes of the movie that she was a drag queen (she has a giraffe neck, with a crazy collarbone), and secondly, her voice (at least for this movie) are nails-on-a-chalkboard irritating. It doesn't help that her character (and Moranis' for that matter) is nothing more than a boring stereotype. As I already said, I loved every minute of Steve Martin's sadistic dentist, that and Bill Murray's masochistic character easily steals the show. Decent puppet effects, a couple of kind of catchy songs, and a kind of crazy energy are the other things I liked.

Must Like Quirky Musicals to enjoy this one... I am a fan! The Casting was spot on with Rick Moranis playing Seymour Krelborm a Skid Row geek with Ellen Greene as Audrey his mousy, secret love interest. Steve Martin was absolutely brilliant as the “pain-wheeling” Dentist. There is just the right mix of Great actors such as James Belushi, and John Candy to enhance the story. This one is Good Clean, CRAZY Fun the whole Family can enjoy! The Director’s Cut also comes with the Theatrical Version which is the one I personally prefer, I guess you would call it “The Happy Ending.” This is an unconventional “Out of the Box” comedy-musical, love story, with some drama and an alien twist. So, if you like crazy different… You just might like this one too.

This is a review for the Blu-ray release. I think we all know this is a good movie. Great packaging and that's about it. The picture quality is grainy. It's very good but not pristine. All the money went into packaging and restoring the original ending. The original ending is a treat. Overall the video quality is not up to 1080P standards. They could have meticulously restored this film frame by frame but they didn't. It does not look that way. I realize some scenes are dark but there's no excuse for grainy film. This looked exactly like a typical fuzzy, grainy film from the 80's. Why not sharpen the picture? The picture is NOT sharp. Great audio soundtrack though.

The Director's Cut is the way the film was meant to be seen and is more close to the original and much much cooler! I took my daughter to see this in the theatres and instantly bought it after how much better it was.

Performances shine in this comedic musical about a talking man-eating-plant and its owner. Steve Martin is exceptionally funny, as is the cameo by Bill Murray. Well worth a watch. Presented here nicely on this widescreen special edition dvd that is sure to please fans.

Love this movie so it's an automatic 5 stars. However it wasn't clear when purchasing that the case is like a hard cover book; and that's just the one I was looking for! Very unique. Love it and the movie. There's even pics inside

The original ending of Little Shop is well worth seeing! The featurette on why the ending was changed was most enlightening. Unfortunately, the song "The Meek Shall Inherit" with its dream sequence was not likewise restored to its original form.
