    Synopsis

    Menace II Society
This debut offering from twin brothers Albert and Allen Hughes was one of the most critically-acclaimed urban crime films to appear in the wake of John Singleton's influential Boyz N the Hood. Set in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, the film is narrated by 18-year-old Caine (Tyrin Turner), a drug dealer and car thief who lives with his religious grandparents. After graduating from high school, Caine shows no ambition beyond hanging out with his friends, so his grandparents kick him out. Among his other troubles are his best friend O-Dog (Larenz Tate), a vicious thug hunted by the police, and the friends and family of the girl Caine got pregnant and then turned his back on. Perhaps the lone positive influence in his sphere is Ronnie (Jada Pinkett), a single parent struggling to raise her young son without the boy falling prey to the 'hood mentality. When their friendship becomes a love affair, Ronnie tries desperately to convince Caine to move with her to Atlanta. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

I missed this film in the 90's but the Hughes Brothers have made a memorable film on the vicious cycle of gang violence affecting low income neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Performances are solid and heartfelt and while some aspects might feel a little dated in terms of fashion the movie takes you into the heart of the neighborhoods that to this day, 24 years later, are struggling with same issues of poverty, drug addiction, and gang violence. Along with Boyz N The Hood, Menace II Society is an important film because of it's unflinching portrayal of the toll and horror of gang violence and neglect that our most vulnerable neighborhoods still face and that we all pay the price for each day the struggle continues because that's one more day that a child is forced to grow up under such dire conditions and potentially turn to crime as a solution. The movie at the very least encourages conversation and dialogue about where our country stands in regards to the most pressing issues affecting our urban population almost 25 years later.

This film was spot on with the early 90's and being a person who lived in this type of atmosphere I was really surprised that I missed this film? I was watching another film and caught the trailer for menace II Society and though... Why not! I'll get it when i see it... THere it was in the $5 bin. Now the picture is NOT Blu-ray quality as far as I'm concerned (especially watching on a 165" screen). But the story and film were excellent!

Overall a great movie at an excellent price. This is not normally my genre, but it depicts life in a gritty violent way. It has been over 20 years since I first saw this film at a friends house, and it left a lasting impression on me. Though not a true story, it accurately depicts the rough choices young black males had to make every day, hoping to live another day. How those choices affected the rest ones life; and in the blink of an it's all over.

Menace is one of the best movies out there as far as telling the life of a hustler. It's definitely a little old so the style might make you laugh now, but if you had watched this movie back when it was new then you know what it was like in those days. To be honest, the acting is not all that great. There is just something about this movie that seems live and real.

It puts you in the heart of the hood (but behind the safety of your tv screen). The movie is intense but it has it's share of positive moments. You can't help but to root for the main character even if you don't necessarily agree with his choices.

Raw, real, and to the point, this movie is a book report about America's love for violence, no matter what the area is. High point of this movie has to be the acting of Jada Pinkett. She really showed the love that most females in hood have. That's right, not females from the hood wants to be video vixen

Pretty decent movie. Good, bad, and ugly parts of what very few people will ever see or understand first hand. I remember seeing this as a kid, and not understanding everything, but I do now. Brings back memories of how different life was before.
