Q: does it have to be constantly updated? will if affected the computer system?

A: It is a Windows laptop. Like any other Windows-based laptop or desktop, it will need to be updated. Windows releases security and OS updates almost every month to keep it in working order.

Q: do the surface come with HDMI ports?

A: No, it does not. As we move more towards cloud-based computing, the need for external devices diminishes. With this, you can "cast" to another Windows machine or use a wireless receiver as well. You can also get a USB-C to HDMI converter if you really need to expand your screen size. This device is more of a "work on the go" type of laptop, not really meant for business office or high-processing tasks.

A very well built portable, but not a powerhouse.

My Microsoft Surface 13 inch Copilot laptop came in a very nice box, and upon opening it, I was a little surprised that as small as it is, it has some weight to it – in a good way. Just under 3 pounds. It has an all metal body that feels very premium and sturdy, and the blue(ish) tint is nice to look at and better than standard metal/grey, in my opinion. This model comes with a 13 inch touchscreen with a pretty standard resolution of 1920 x 1280 pixels and unfortunately, on a 60Hz refresh rate. At 400 nits of brightness max, it’s good enough for indoor use and shaded use outdoors, though in sunlight it’s a bit harder to see. The anti-reflective claim is reasonable, though I still see some level of reflections on it. It’s not a great display, but it’s a good display, for all basic uses. There are 13.8 and 15 inch versions of this laptop with higher spec displays on them, though. First thing of course is make sure you take the time to run through the setup properly and allow the Surface to do all updates during the setup. I will have to say though, this took a LONG time, even with fast wifi and a good connection to the laptop. Longer than any other setup I’ve done. So make sure you have plenty of time to devote to the initial process the first time you power on the laptop. The power button is in the upper-right corner, and will also double as your fingerprint sensor for logging in once you set that up. There is no webcam log-in function unfortunately, though the cam is 1080p it just doesn’t allow for this. Once set up, the keyboard feels nice and solid and does not feel cheap. There’s a nice give to the keys. There is a backlight for the keys should you need them. You have again, a key for power and fingerprint access, and a dedicated key for Microsoft Copilot. The trackpad is standard with no haptics, but all of the basic gesture controls you need, and feels solid. Wifi 7th gen connected to my Wifi with no issues and I tested out some wireless earbuds using the Bluetooth 5.4 and there haven’t been any connections issues so far. The built-in speakers are ok for general use; no speaker grills but under the keyboard it seems, and while you won’t be throwing parties with them, the sound if fine to me. There are dual microphones and when tested during a video call, the other person said they could tell I was on a laptop but the sound wasn’t bad. In terms of ports, there are 2 ea USB-C 3.2 ports that can be used for charging and data transfer or as a display for up to 2, 4k monitors on the right side. One older USB-A port and a headphone jack on the right. Unfortunately, there isn’t a HDMI or memory card slot on this model. The 1080p webcam does pretty well and gives you basic adjustments including levels of background blur if you need them. Decent to good light gives you the best results, and low light performance is so-so ok. This Surface laptop has a Snapdragon X Plus, 8 core processor, and Qualcomm Adreno integrated graphics. Mid-range overall. While you can do basic games, photo editing, and light video editing with this setup, it’s not a powerhouse setup, so if you need something for more intense gaming or video editing, you will need to seek out something that has a heftier processor and graphics. The built-in Qualcomm Hexagon NPU does allow this model to do the newest AI features that everything is jumping on board with, including Microsoft Copilot to answer your questions and image creation in Paint, and more. No issues there. The 16 gigs of RAM will keep things running smoothly. My model has 512 gigs of storage space but the base model only comes with 256 gigs – very basic and to me, it’s worth a little extra to bump it up. I haven’t had any issues at all running Office type programs on this, or watching streaming services. This Surface model can easily handle that. Trying out a couple of heavier duty games though, and it did skip frames and started to warm up noticeably, so again, you’ll need more beef if that’s your goal. The battery is said to run “up to” 23 hours of on device video playback or 16 hours of active web use. While I hadn’t had it long, I have been able to make it through two standard work days before needing to charge it. The brick included is standard (in two pieces you snap together, 45 watts) and plugs into one of the USB-C ports to recharge reasonably quickly. So, overall I like the Surface 13 inch, but with some minor complaints. I do love the excellent build quality, the nice keyboard, the color, and the size/portability of it, and the very good battery life. I’m not thrilled with the Snapdragon X processor, however; I feel it could have been beefed up a bit at this price point. The monitor likewise is just ok for me and I would have liked to have seem something a notch up. Since it’s a touchscreen (which personally I don’t use much on a laptop), then being able to fold the screen back to use as a tablet and have stylus support might have been nice. So, it’s a mixed bag for me. I think anyone who needs a very basic use, very portable, and well made laptop will get the most out of this. Those seeking a powerhouse need to step up a bit. Look for sales on it, to make it an even better value-for-money.

A Good On the Go Laptop with Great Battery Life

I’ve been using the new Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC for over a week now, and it’s already become my on the go laptop. It’s lightweight, runs quietly, and doesn’t skip a beat whether I’m sending emails, streaming shows, or working in MS Office. When it comes to design Microsoft nailed the look. The Ocean color has a clean, modern vibe without being over-the-top and with a full aluminum body casing. The keyboard is one of the better ones I’ve used, with full backlighting, when typing it's very smooth with a nice bit of travel and has good palm detention when typing. The glass trackpad is very responsive and has a nice click when pressing it. Performance wise, the Surface laptop is built on the new Snapdragon X Plus chip with 8-cores, and it definitely holds its own when it comes to multitasking. I ran a Cinebench R23 Multi Core test bench that came in at 6803 pts and single score at 1011 pts, both are respectable for this laptop. That being said I wouldn't expect it to do any huge power hungry renderings, big 4K video editing on this laptop, or modern graphics intensive video games. Packed in this laptop is also 16 GB of which is plenty for the tasks you will be performing on this laptop and didn't have any issues with using all of it. In terms of what packed in this laptop, I was a tad disappointed that it only had 512 GB SSD, where at this point in 2025 that 1 TB should be standard for any laptop over $500. Whether you’re working across multiple apps or dabbling in some AI-generated art or productivity tools, the Surface feels snappy and responsive. As for the screen, the 13" PixelSense Flow display at 1920x1280 resolution is good. It’s not going to blow your mind if you’re coming from something like an OLED or a high refresh rate ( in 2025 I would like to see 120 Hz as the standard refresh rate), but for general use it’s sharp, bright enough, and has a glossy coat. Having a touch screen is always a nice addition when showing a presentation to some or simply selecting a show or movie on a streaming site. The touch screen is very responsive especially when scrolling. The webcam is acceptable for a laptop coming in at 1080p, which should get the job done for quick video meetings. The star feature of the Surface laptop is the battery life on this laptop, coming in at 23 hours. I’ve gone all day without plugging it in during a full workload at the office. I even stopped throwing the charger in my backpack if I know I'll just be gone for the day. This kind of battery life makes it perfect for on the go and travel. When it comes to ports the Surface went with the minimalist approach, There are 2x USB-C 3.2 ports,1x USB-A, and 1x 3.5mm headphone jack. That being said, I wish there was an HDMI port and a SD card slot. So, you will need to get a USB-C to HDMI cord if you want to use an external monitor, a USB-C port dongle or a docking station if you need to plug in accessories regularly. Pros: Long battery life: all-day usage without worrying Lightweight and quiet, great for travel or working on the go Comfortable keyboard and large, smooth touchpad Clean, stylish design in three color options Snapdragon X Plus chip handles multitasking and AI tools well Fanless, silent performance Touchscreen works well for casual use Cons: No HDMI or SD card slot 60Hz refresh rate feels a little outdated Not meant for gaming or heavy creative workloads RAM is not upgradable . In the end, the Surface Laptop doesn’t try to do everything but what it does, it does really well. It’s a clean, capable laptop built for people who want something reliable, portable. If your day mostly revolves around web apps, Office spreadsheets/ documents, video calls, and light creative work, this is a great pick. The AI tools are a nice bonus, but even without them, it’s just a solid everyday machine.
