Minority Report [P&S] [2 Discs] [DVD] [2002]

Based on a short story by the late Philip K. Dick, this science fiction-thriller reflects the writer's familiar preoccupation with themes of concealed identity and mind control. Tom Cruise stars as John Anderton, a Washington, D.C. detective in the year 2054. Anderton works for "Precrime," a special unit of the police department that arrests murderers before they have committed the actual crime. Precrime bases its work on the visions of three psychics or "precogs" whose prophecies of future events are never in error. When Anderton discovers that he has been identified as the future killer of a man he's never met, he is forced to become a fugitive from his own colleagues as he tries to uncover the mystery of the victim-to-be's identity. When he kidnaps Agatha (Samantha Morton), one of the precogs, he begins to formulate a theory about a possible frame-up from within his own department. Directed by Steven Spielberg, who hired a team of futurists to devise the film's numerous technologically advanced gadgets, Minority Report co-stars Colin Farrell, Max von Sydow, and Neal McDonough.

    A cult classic

While some 21st Century science fiction has crashed and burned(the TV shows Andromeda and Star Trek: Enterprise, anyone?), other works of the genre have fared better. Among them is this Steven Spielberg gem, which is the followup his other memorable downbeat sci-fi film, A.I.-Artificial Intelligence. Laced with 9/11 overtones, this Philip K. Dick adaptation rivals Blade Runner and Total Recall as the correct way to adapt the author's notoriously difficult works to the screen. While we may mock Tom Cruise these days for his couch-hopping antics, this film is solid proof that he can, in fact, act. His John Anderton is a pitiable, tortured, paranoid man who, thanks to Cruise's skillful acting, the audience instantly sides with when the revolutionary system of capturing killers before they kill targets him. The supporting cast, which includes Colin Farrell, Max Von Sydow, Jessica Harper, and a pre-Cold Case Kathryn Morris, is also first rate, each portraying memorable characters. The scene stealer, though, is Samantha Morton as the genetically-treated woman who holds the key to Anderton's fate. It's a performance that is both scary and heartbreaking and should've earned Morton 2002's Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Spielberg's behind-the-scenes triumvirate of Michael Kahn(editing), Janusz Kaminski(cinematography), and John Williams(music) do their usual fantastic jobs. One word of warning: this film, like A Clockwork Orange(though not quite as explicit), is not for all tastes. There are a number of scenes which urge that its PG-13 rating be heeded(including a nice homage to the aforementioned Kubrick film).

It is the year 2054 and the film takes place in Washington D. C. For the past several years, murder is all but a thing of the past. With the advent of the Pre Crime division, where three pre-cogs, see a murder before it happens. Tom Cruise plays the chief of the Pre Crimes division, leading the troops in the apprehension of these criminals who haven't, yet are about to commit murder. His character is plagued by the murder of his son, six years prior and is suffering the emotional damage from that murder. The pre-cogs, foretell a murder and as Tom Cruise is working his amazing futuristic computer to discover who the murderer is, he finds that it is he who is the murderer. And so goes the film as he makes his way out of the Pre Crime building and starts on his quest to figure out who has set him up.

First off, the movie is what it is. Lots of site for you to get reviews on the film itself. I wouldn't have bought this if I didn't like the film and want it to be a part of my collection. I am a huge Steelbook fan, so I was very excited to find out Paramount was releasing a bunch of catalog titles in Blu-ray Steelbooks. I bought this along with 4 others in the same trip to Best Buy on the first day of their release. I was very disappointed to realize that Paramount chose to only include the first of the two discs that make up this title's BD release in non-steelbook packaging. That means for longer titles you get no special features. No UV or digital copy, either. Very disappointing, but still didn't deter me.

Futuristic "Who dunnit?" or better yet "who really is going to do it, because it may not be who you think it is." Full of plot twists and turns, deception, and betrayal. Questions raised about who can you trust and what really happened before it happens. Sounds confusing, but this is a movie that had me thinking ahead, trying to guess the eventual outcome of the crime situation. This film demands active participation from the viewer. "Minority Report" has the perfect blend of drama, special effects, mystery, suspense and intrigue, that will have you gasping as it builds to a shocking climax. This is a very satisfying movie with a pleasant ending. Alfred Hitchcock would have been proud of Steven Spielberg.

I had never seen Minority Report prior to this Blu-Ray. I had also just seen E.T for the first time before watching it and wasn't really that impressed. Minority Report however I found to be not only one of the most unique and original science fiction films I had seen but also quite possibly Speilberg's masterpiece. I dare not reveal any of the plot. See the movie for yourself. Also bravo to Paramount for putting out this movie as a 2-Disc set with tons of bonus features.

Tom Cruise is a superstar. Its evident in this movie. He carrys the movie and does what he is best at: action! Spielberg's direction is great as well as the filters he uses for the movie to give it a cool look. Alot of great scenes and a look into a bleak future make this movie a standout.

I watched this Blu-ray on my XboxOne Console and my review is as follows. Picture quality was very good. The movie story looked a lot better in its trailer. The story was too science-fictional for my preference. I liked the idea about pre-crime but those people laying in that pool thing were way too unrealistic and wierd. The rest of the movie I liked however; I will probably not end up watching it again.

Steelbook is probably the only reason I continue to buy Blu-Rays/DVDs. I prefer the Digital Copies now because it's just easier to access it anywhere, and I don't have to hoard things in my house. With that being said, this is a beautiful steelbook case and I would recommend it. The movie was one of my favorites while growing up, and I still enjoy it. I wonder if the TV show will be any good.
