Compatible with most Nikon digital SLR cameras

Supports i-TTL flash control
For precise flash exposures and seamless fill-flash performance. Also features manual and distance-priority manual flash.
3 light distribution patterns
Include standard, center-weighted and even for customized use.
Color filter identification
Adjusts the camera's white balance mode based on the mounted hard-type color filter. Automatic format identification senses the FX- or DX-format digital SLR camera being used and optimizes light distribution.
Auto power zoom coverage
Covers lenses as wide as 24mm and up to 120mm in FX format.
Flash value (FV) lock
Locks in a specific flash output on the main subject, regardless of composition, aperture or the lens zoom position.
Adjustable head
Tilts down to 7° or up to 90° with click-stops at -7°, 0°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. Rotate the head horizontally up to 180°.
Wireless Commander mode
Controls up to 2 remote Speedlight groups, as well as an unlimited number of Speedlights. Select up to 3 groups when used as a remote Speedlight. Four wireless channel options help eliminate multicamera conflicts.
Rotary select dial
Sets key functions. Master and remote control switch makes operation easy.
Flash tube overheat protection
Increases the recycle time when the Speedlight detects heat buildup to prevent overheating.

This speedlite does what I need it to do

The only thing that would be nice if it was a rechargeable, instead of 4 AA batteries. The batteries did last me through a 6hr quince photoshoot.

Worked Great For My Shoot

I didn't want to over power the exposures and was able to ramp down the flash to use just enough power to light the subject without killing the background. I'm really familiar with all things Nikon, so it was not hard for me to figure out how to use almost all of the functions without going through the manual. This SB-700 is a winner for me because it can provide a LOT of light or just enough. What I mean is, I don't need to buy a small flash unit and also a big one. So, I am very happy that I don't need to figure out which flash unit to put on the camera when I can just use one for day, night, fill, etc.

- A:Answer It varies on what pictures you want to take. I personally never use the built in camera flash. Most built in camera flashes work well for your average flash needs, but I hate the effect it gives. To me, the built in flash makes the picture look flat, as well as its a hard light that shows oils and other imperfections. With external flashes like the SB-700 you have the ability to indirectly illuminate your subject in a variety of ways causing a softer, more creative lighting situation (having the ability to "bounce"). That's why I like external flashes. If you are just a novice; the SB-400 is probably the best way to go. Its a great little flash as well as cheaper then your average speed light. It also has bounce capabilities in 4 steps up to 90 degrees (even though its not 360 degrees of pure swivel like the SB-700 its a great flash). Its light, small, and easy to use all while giving you great pictures when a flash is needed.
