    Synopsis

    Oz the Great and Powerful
A mischievous magician gains the wisdom to become a powerful ruler after being swept away to a land of magic and mystery as director Sam Raimi and screenwriters Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) explore the genesis of author L. Frank Baum's enduring tales of Oz. Shady illusionist Oscar Diggs (James Franco) enchants curious audiences at a Kansas circus. A self-professed con man, he's a fast-talking performer who aspires to follow in the footsteps of inventors like Thomas Edison. Oscar is being chased across the circus grounds by the rampaging Strongman when a tornado blows in and everyone runs for cover. Seeing a hot-air balloon as his only chance for escape, the illusionist jumps in and cuts himself free. Magically transported to the wondrous world of Oz, he soon encounters Theodora (Mila Kunis), a temperamental witch who surmises that he is the wizard named after their land (Oscar's nickname is Oz), foretold to fall from the sky, defeat a nasty witch, and ascend to the throne. Theodora takes Oscar to the Emerald City to meet her sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz), a powerful witch who reveals that he cannot become the rightful ruler of Oz until he's accomplished his mission. Later, as Oscar and his new flying-monkey companion Finley (voice of Zach Braff) prepare to face their fearsome enemy, they're joined by the fragile but fearless China Girl (voice of Joey King) and benevolent witch Glinda the Good (Michelle Williams), who help them prepare for the arduous battle ahead. Together with the brave people of Oz, Oscar draws up a plan to rid the land of evil once and for all, and become the great and powerful king who will rule from his throne in the Emerald City. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The opening of the movie is hands down my favorite part. I kind of wish they had kept the majority of the film in that beautiful black and white and classic effects. The digital effects are meant to WOW you and they just don't. They are good for certain, but so obviously digital effects it almost looks cartoonish. Zach Braff as Finley and the transformation of the Witch are two of the best parts of both the original and this film. The movies flaws kind of fade away over time, which is good for repeat viewing. Very nice digital blu ray transfer and sound.

This is truly an epic that holds true to the original movie. As a prequel, it's a fantastic trip to see who the Wizard is, where he came from, and how the Witches became who they are. As a parent, it's a fantastic family film. For fans of all the OZ books, this is truly a tribute to the works of Baum, with more in-depth storytelling to entertain all ages. A great heart-felt adventure down the yellow brick road, with a finale that is awe inspiring. There are even many subtle throwbacks to the original movie. (Do you know WHO the wizard breaks up with while in Kansas? Hint- she's marrying Bob Gale) :) The only thing now is to hope they do a sequel that starts where this story left off and ends where the original Oz started.

I don't know what Disney is doing with its spring releases. Last year it was John Carter. A movie I liked a bunch and hoped to see sequels, but they didn't support the movie and let a few critics kill it. Now they have a modest success with Oz and they try to kill it with an asinine marketing plan that involves ridiculous bundles and even more ridiculous pricing. Why is the single disc 3D blu ray more than the Combo pack. Lets kill a format that already seems to be in its death throws. I love to use my 3D player/TV and have page extra to get movies in this format, but this is a very bad idea. I sure hope Disney learned their lesson.

Tha movie itself was great, especially in 3D. Character development was well done, cinematography great, colors very vivid. Only complaint I have is Disney's way of only including 3D Blu ray disc, charging $5 more than the Blu ray combo pack (which had Blu ray, DVD & digital copy). Thought that was a rude way to extort money. Then, Disney topped it by offering the regular Blu ray via the Disney Movie Rewards program for an additional $5.99. I found that insulting! If this is Disney's path forward, I've purchased my last item from them. Buy the Blu ray combo pack and skip the 3D version.

My wife and I saw this in 3D at the IMAX in Nashville when it first came out. It was mind-blowing! We recently purchased a 70" 3D Vizio at Best Buy, so naturally we bought the 3D version of the movie. We were blown away by the quality of the video and the superb 3D effects. We had relatives come to visit us from Baltimore who'd never seen a 3D movie on TV. They were overwhelmed. They said that the combination of the quality of the movie and our TV sold them on 3D. I have no hesitation in strongly recommending this DVD.

Big anticiaption with not so big let down as a Oz fan. Always nice to see anything related to the Wizard of Oz hit the big screen. Acting with Franco was much to be desired. His personality seems static with every role he plays, but the movie was fun and with great viusals and color. The wicked witch was nasty, and enjoyed seeing how "she became" who she was. Overall, good to watch, but disappointing as the hype was greater than the move. Definitely a DVD rental to enjoy with little kids, but sad for the adult Oz fans.

This movie was a bit disappointing. Although the visuals were good, this movie lacked a plot and acting skills. The characters were miscast. Neither Franco or Kunis were convincing in their roles. Franco's Oscar Diggs was not interesting at all, and Mila Kunis seemed completely disinterested in her character. Weisz was the only one who seemed to put some effort into her character. This is definitely not a great movie, but the visuals and Weisz make it worth seeing.

I love the Wizard of Oz, I have seen Return to Oz, I have seen Wicked the play. So I thought yes I must see this. I hated it when it was in the theater. I only bought this for my 8 year old and 17 year old cause they liked it. The reason I didn't like it cause I was familiar with Wicked which I loved. This is nothing like it. And I do not like James Franco or Mila Kunis in these parts. So if you know nothing about pre-Wizard of Oz you may like it.
