Using the XXL Air Fryer is like owning a microwave in the early 80’s. It’s bulky, has no display screen, uses manual dials, and nobody knows how long it takes to actually cook anything. Fortunately, Philips has created an App that allows you to look up recipes from your phone – which helps, but often leaves you hangry - frantically searching the dark web for something as simple as the cooking time for tater tots. Locating the perfect recipe wouldn’t be a big deal except for the fact that the machine shuts off completely when the timer hits 0. Yup. This modern marvel has no power switch. It is controlled entirely by an Egg Timer just like the one your grandmother had in her kitchen. Once that timer clicks down, the machine turns off completely. If your food needs just 2 more minutes to reach a magical golden brown - Too bad! You have to twist the knob past 4 minutes before the oven will turn back on – and by that time this chubby easy bake oven has cooled down and will need some additional time to heat back up. The good news is that you probably won’t burn your food – the sweltering desert air swirling briskly inside will likely turn your dinner to dried out jerky pucks long before anything is scorched. If you currently own an oil fryer and are replacing it with the XXL Air Fryer, you will probably feel at least mildly disappointed. Hot air simply doesn’t cook in the same way as hot oil. This is essentially a small convection oven – a coil located above the basket heats up and a fan swirls the hot air around inside. Ultimately, you will not quite have the deep-fried options that you’re used to (you won’t end up with the same hand battered chicken strips, or homemade doughnuts that you’re used to). If you are choosing this Air Fryer instead of purchasing your first oil deep fryer, you will likely be quite pleased. The results are healthier than deep fried food, the basket can hold enough food for 2 – 3 people, and the machine is incredibly easy to use (even if quality recipes are not always easy to find). It is a great option for those with kids wanting to help cook – especially as it cannot be accidentally left on (as the power is only on for the length selected on the timer). Overall; the machine is well made, but it is a bit of an unsightly beast that consumes more counter space than any other kitchen appliance you may own. If you are not seeking out a small oven specifically to help you eat healthier, then I would pass on this (and all) Air Fryers. Philips has made a decent machine. ...I just don't believe that the Air Fryer trend will ever pick up much steam. PROS: + Cooks food in a much healthier way when compared to a conventional oil fryer. + Cooking time is much faster than a conventional oven + Safer to use than an deep fryer that can cause burns + Easier to clean than an oil fryer + The machine has a compartment in the back that holds the cord when not in use. + Large enough to cook food for around 3 people + Cooks evenly and consistently CONS: - There is no on/off switch. You must wait for the timer to count down, or you must force it to 0 (potentially breaking the timer – which would mean you cannot power the machine on at all). - The chime for the timer is incredibly quiet. Instead, you will be alerted that the time has ended as the fan stops blowing and the machine shuts off. - Cooking time is generally much slower than frying in oil. - Often dries out food if you don’t have the perfect cooking time. - It is often difficult to locate the appropriate cooking time as many foods are missing from the Recipe App and manufacturers don’t put Air Fryer cooking time in their instructions. - Food Cooks best in a single layer (as the hot air doesn’t flow around all sides as grease would in a fryer). This means that when cooking items such as Fries, you must frequently open the drawer and shake the basket to obtain even crisping. - The fan makes a fair amount of noise (and is certainly louder than a fryer or a conventional oven). - The machine is pretty large when compared to the size of the basket inside. Will add to kitchen clutter. - It seems as though no thought was put into the design / appearance. The machine is just a giant black box that most will want to hide away (if only there was enough space to store this beast). - A great number of the recipes within the app require accessories that are sold separately.

The Phillips Air Fryer is a great way to fry food for those seeking a healthier alternative to the conventional method. The set up is very easy and simple to use and with the addition of the XL package you can now feed up to 5 people in your family, depending of course on how much they eat. I'll do my best to make this review quick and simple in your decision making on rather or not you should pick one up. First off out of the box you get the whole unit assembled and ready to go. All you really need to do is plug it in to a power source and clean the three separate trays. The first tray is your basket which will serve for your food placement. The basket is a decent size and measures out 9" x 9" with a depth of 4". Its not extremely large but its not small either. Your not going to fit a full size chicken or turkey in there but you shouldn't have a problem fitting a smaller size piece. Your also going to receive a cook book with different recipe and serving sizes. They even provide an app you can use in the event that you wish to seek new ideas with food to cook. The next two pieces are the bottom plates which have little swirls on them. According to Phillips the design of these trays serve for two purposes. One is to help with heat displacement to give you even cooking and the other serves as a fat or grease trap. Now for those that my not know exactly what an air fryer is or how well it works let me take a quick second and break it down in its simplicity. An air fryer allows you to fry food by using super heated air. Now im not 100% sure if it uses the same method as some of the infrared grills that can super heat food in under minutes but what i do know is that it uses no open flame and comes pretty darn close to frying food in minutes all depending on the serving size. Obviously larger meals such as whole chickens will take longer versus smaller meals like fish sticks. With the Phillips air fryer you are not limited to just frying food but you can also bake with it to. Now while i haven't had a chance to bake anything with it i can tell you that this does seem like an ideal thing to use for baking due to the fact that it heats up alot faster then your oven will and gives off better heat displacement. Really there is a very wide variety of things this unit can do and frying food is just the tip of the iceberg. Lets talk functionality. This unit is very easy to use. The book gives you a guide to different food temperature settings. The unit itself only has two dials, one serves for a timer which goes up to 60 mins and the other serves as your temp setting which goes up to 400F. I have a family of 5 including myself so the first day i got this i wanted to see if it could make enough food to feed the whole family on one serving. I decided to make fish sticks and french fries my first night. i made about 20 fish sticks that night with room to still make more. This tray also had more then enough room to make french fries to feed about 6 people. The first night was a success and i was able to feed everyone with just one go with each meal. The fish sticks came out very crispy and were done in 10 mins. i was very surprised how crispy they came out. They had a nice crunch to it and actually tasted very good. I am not a fish stick guy at all but these things tasted so good i found myself eating some for dinner that night. Now the french fries on the other had were a little tricky. They took longer to make and didn't come out as crispy. This is were i experimented a little bit to see if i could get different results and here's what i found. The smaller fries have no problem getting crispy and providing you with that snap as you bite down however the larger ones did not do this. This is where i realized you can add a little bit of oil to your meals to give them that nice outer crunch. For example the next day i ordered pizza and decided to make wings. I made a very small batch cause i was not too sure how they would come out. The wings came out cooked and had a decent texture to it but i like my wings to be crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. So what i did was i put a light coat of oil on the outside of my wings, put about 10 in the fryer and in about 15 mins they were done and made exactly how i liked them. They looked as if they had been deep fried and had that nice crunchy outer layer that i liked. Some foods are gonna fry better than others but the nice thing about this is that there is plenty of room to experiment with different methods to achieve your cooking goal. I found that a little bit of oil helped to give me that deep fry look and taste without having to completely dip them in oil. The list of possible things you can do is endless and would take a very long time to go on and on about all the possibilities. Here's the bottom line. This unit is very easy to use and provides cooking recipes to help guide you in the right direction. If you have a family of 5 i would say that's about the limit at which this unit can serve for. If you have a bigger family you may find yourself having to refill the unit a couple more times to make enough food for the whole family. Whats really nice about this unit is the fact that it cooks food in an enclosed capsule with no open flame making this a safer way to go than deep frying over an open flame. Foods are cooked in minutes rather than hours (depending on size of course) and come out tasting great without as much of the grease as deep fry. The unit is very easy to clean and is dishwasher safe( only the trays). This really is one of those units where you can set it and forget it. Once the timer dings it automatically shuts off the unit since there is no on/off button. This is a great unit and so far i have yet to find any bad things to say about it. Maybe as i cook more foods i may find some flaws but as of right now this has been a nice piece to have that allows me and my wife to cook food while being able to do other things as well. Pros: -Cooks foods fast -Serves up to 5 people with ease -Easy to clean -Healthier alternative to deep fry Cons: -None so far

We have this Air Fryers little brother and found it to be an great appliance but its small size was limiting my options and I knew if I had a larger one I could do so much more. So we went out and bought another brand (which we are very happy with) that had a touch screen and presets for various foods and I became a happy camper with the bigger Air Fryer, even doing a whole turkey breast. Actually we liked it so much we decided a second one would be nice to have and decided that we would like to try this one as Phillips makes a very high quality appliance. It's not touch screen, but really I usually just did a manual setting on it anyway so using only the time and temp dials on this is no hindrance at all I really like the addition of a slide out basket trolley type slide as you dont have to lift out the basket and find a place to set it until your ready to eat and it make the occasional checking and shaking a breeze for the very same reason. This versatile little device saves time on some things but others not so much but it does make delicious food. Nearly anything you can cook in an oven or deep fryer with little modification to the recipe can be cooked in an air fryer. In some ways its like a deep fryer that only requires a sprits of oil from a sprayer on some things, like poultry for super crisp and brown skin, while other things need no added oil at all. My wife said the air fryer is where I have made the best wings ever. And quick potato sides such as fries and tots come out perfect and very tasty. This Phillips Air Fryer certainly does not heat the kitchen up much like an oven would or a deep fryer which is wonderful on hot summer days and evenings. Its super easy to use (just remember to shake the basket or otherwise turn the food as needed) and every part of the basket assembly is dishwasher safe if needed or desired, but its usually a quick and simple wash in the sink. It comes with a recipe book and there are tons and tons of recipes from meals to desserts on line. I recommend you go ahead and pull the trigger and start experimenting today :)
