A nostalgic look at an old favorite.

Pickings at the theaters back then for this kind of content were pretty slim. So when "Popeye" opened in 1980 I was super excited. Back then, I was just happy to see some of my favorite characters on the big screen. Watching this movie now, I think it's a sublime little piece of filmmaking that is much better than you might remember. Sweethaven is wonderfully rendered and there's so much going on with characters in the background it feels like a real place. The picture here is probably as good as we'll ever get for this film, but after being stuck watching grainy 4:3 for years on TV, this is a revelation by comparison. Special features are incredibly bare bones, but for less than 10 bucks, can't complain. Still a good value.

good movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of those movies that you have to appreciate for it's simplicity and sometimes almost cheesy scenarios. I can't imagine anyone playing these characters other than the people cast. Robin Williams performance as Popeye is reminiscent of the really old B&W Popeye cartoons where half of the time he's mumbling which adds to the comedy. Even the costumes in this movie are semi-cartoonish which cleverly adds to the cartoon-to-live-action transition while reminding us that the silliness is part of the reason we loved the cartoons and characters as much as we did, and still do. Bravo to Paramount for finally releasing this on DVD for the people like me who have been searching for this classic since I bought my DVD player. I've been checking on a weekly to monthly basis for a long time now, and am estatic to see my searching has paid off. If you haven't seen this fantastic movie before, or haven't seen it in years, take the time to rent it one more time so you can see what you'd be gaining by ordering or pre-ordering this today!!

Robin Willams first movie
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. papa is a classic back from 1980 and is a really good film even though the critics dubbed it a failure. I personally went to see it when it came out in the movies I think like six or seven times as a teenager and I loved it. Critics back down or nothing like the critics now it affected Robin Williams career before he actually became a top star.even if you're a fan of the old Popeye cartoon this is a really nice movie well-written the characters are funny the acting is is is really decent there's no special effects at all really but all around it's it's a really good movie.

A childhood favorite...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Growing up as a kid in the 90’s meant that I also saw a lot of 80’s films. Popeye was a film that was always on TV. Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall brought these classic cartoon characters to life. Although, certain aspects of the movie may not have aged well, seeing the film again brings me back to my childhood and how fun things were back then. To a time before tragedy would befall Robin and Shelley. A better time.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If this had come out today, everything would have been CG, and there probably would have been another two movies after it. As it stands, the set holds a lot of the same magic that the Pirate Town from Hook does, it's all very lively. To put things into perspective, prior to the Waterworld attraction, the set from this movie occupied that spot. This is a fun movie that the whole family can enjoy, and unlike the Goonies, the octopus fight in this one remains intact.

He's Popeye The Sailor Man!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A fun live action rendition of a cartoon classic. Movie can be a bit slow at times, but overall it is pretty good and Robin Williams did a great job as the titular Popeye. Great price for the Blu-Ray release as well.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movie plot is very simple - just like old Popeye cartoons. What makes this one so entertaining is how each actor brings their character to life. Since this is a musical (I hate musicals - usually), each song is guaranteed to stay with you for hours (possibly even days). If you are a Popeye cartoon fan, then this is one video you really should add to your library.
