    Synopsis

    Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
This mockumentary satire of the music business and modern celebrity centers on self-absorbed pop rapper Conner4Real (Andy Samberg). Once a member of a popular rap trio called the Style Boyz, Conner is now a solo artist about to drop his second album. Unfortunately, the release gets abysmal reviews, and his career begins to melt down when his attempts at rehabing his image lead to such disasters as a global blackout and a proposal to his girlfriend interrupted by a wolf attack. Eventually, Conner considers burying the hatchet with former colleagues Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer) in order to reunite the Style Boyz. Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, Sarah Silverman, and Imogen Poots co-star. Samberg, Taccone, and Schaffer co-wrote the screenplay, while Taccone and Schaffer shared directing duties. ~ Jack Rodgers, Rovi

There is a definitive climactic feel to everything about the latest venture from The Lonely Island, as if a culmination of everything the trio has been working towards since "Lazy Sunday" debuted over ten years ago. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer have always had a knack for writing these catchy, hilarious spoofs of trending musical styles by taking timely and/or brutally honest perspectives and applying them to legit beats created by credible producers. The trick is they convey their sometimes cutting commentary and other times all out ridiculousness with the mentality of the pop culture machine in that it all feels superfluous and can be enjoyed for its surface level pleasures, but if one cares to look-there is more there. The Lonely Island have applied that same approach and ideology to their latest feature film project as this is very much a mockumentary that is lampooning the trend of pop stars producing their own "behind the scenes" documentaries in order to both appeal further to their established fan base while hopefully converting a few of the uninitiated as well. Out of the big, sprawling narrative we call life the managing teams around the likes of Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and One Direction have crafted three-act narratives around their phenomenon's in order to give some sense of structure to lives that likely have very little of it. The Lonely Island have taken the idea of this type of branding and selling and picked out every aspect in which they can make fun of thus creating the perfect vessel of sorts for them to both create their own music and release it simultaneously while adding the all-important visual element to those songs in the form of a feature film. As a longtime fan of The Lonely Island and pretty much all they stand for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping feels like that aforementioned culmination due to the fact this format provides the perfect stage for the type of comedy and social commentary The Lonely Island has always been good at, but have now been afforded the chance to do so on a much bigger scale. Are there issues with the film as a whole? Sure, a few, but to pick out the minor quibbles would be to detract from how much fun it is to watch this deconstruction of not only the music industry, but pop culture in general and the near perfect execution with which it pulls off the task it sets out to accomplish.

From the hilarious monologues, To the amazing celebrity cameos, To the outright offensive song lyrics which leaves you crying with laughter, Pop star: never stop stopping is a must see for any lonely island, Andy Samberg, comedy or even just music lover! I definitely recommend you see this and buy it because the lonely island need to be making more movies if they turn out like this. Go see this movie now, I just can't recommend enough. Though nearer the end of the middle act some of the jokes became dragged on a little bit, also the ending was a little predictable but to be honest i think the film was designed to be predictable, as it is parodying various musical artists. Apart from that the film isn't far from a perfect comedy.

I'm making this five stars not because it's one of the greatest films ever made, or even one of the best in its genre (actually there aren't many, so maybe it is #2 right after Walk Hard). I give it five because it delivers all you could want from a film like this. The music is catchy, the actors nail their parts, the cameos by musicians are great, the mockery of ridiculous things we've seen in the music industry is entertaining. If you laugh at Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office or Parks and Recreation, this is probably up your alley.

This movie takes you on one wild & very outrageous ride! I had the opportunity to see it earlier this week @ an advanced screening, but I had to decline due to unforeseen circumstances, but I wish I had because this is the type of film where I would want to see it either for free in a multiple of ways: i.e. someone buying me a ticket; seeing it at an advanced screening; or seeing it for half-price or at a matinee; or even having a friend who works at a theater get me in 4 free of charge admission.

This is definitely the best Lonely Island movie for sure. If you love them, then you will love this movie. I love the direction they took with the structure of the movie, and it’s fun to follow along on this popstar’s journey to find what’s truly important to him. And that’s friendship. Definitely a good deal for this movie too.

Any fan of The Lonely Island, or of SNL, or Andy Sanberg, or a well-done music mock-umentary will LOVE this comedy. Fans of a certain bratty, Canadian pop star might not.. but could still appreciate the level at which these guys have lambasted one. Tons of great cameos, great music and greater performances make this one of the funniest movies about music ever!

If you're a fan of Lonely Island you will like this movie. The bluray has some great special features including most music videos and CMZ clips. There are a few things that are disappointing. Some songs are missing. The commentary is pretty horrible. None of them are at all into it and Jorma is on a speakerphone from a cell phone the whole time.

The Lonely Island’s take on celebrity, fandom, and humility is quite funny, well told in its documentary-esque style, and well told. The third act veers into cheese and predictability but the film overall pulls off its attempt with style and gusto. The soundtrack is worth a listen-to alone.
