Hello BrandiC, the "random play" function is integrated on the shelf system and only works for CD format not when playing MP3 format, however the shuffle feature is on the Ipod and the shelf system is a mere speaker system when using it for the Iphone so it will play what the Ipod is sending in the order the Ipod sends it.
