The Grandpad has a camera and speaker so it more like you talk at the device. You do not pick it up and hold it to your ear. You can choose a voice call or what they refer to as a video chat. The video chat allows the caller and the senior to see one another: similar to FaceTime or Skype without the need to get those apps and waiting. Those calling the GrandPad need the app on their phone and use that to connect with senior. Hope that helps!!

Yes absolutely!! It uses a speaker phone. So your loved can talk to you basically from anywhere. When you call, or they call you, it gives you an option to use the video feature or just the phone feature.

You can't hold it up to your ear; you'd use speaker phone. Also does talk to text.

As of today 01/25.2022 this device can NOT call 911, according to their website FAQ's and Chat personnel!
