As far as I could tell, there wasn't really a way to secure the connection. If someone was just walking by the house and decided to look for a direct wi-fi connection, it seems that they'd be able to do so. That being said, the Roku offers the same functionality of this device plus all the other Roku features. I also think that Roku has a level of security as well for associating your device with it. I wouldn't have even purchased this device had I realized at the time that a Roku can do what it does.
