- Answer The echo dots has a speaker built in already. So you do not need a speaker and can download the Alexa app, plugin the Alexa dot and follow the setup prompts and start using.

- Answer You need a smartphone for the initial set up. Then it works seamlessly off of your wifi after. I would suggest having a friend set it up for you on their phone and then they can delete the app. (Note: I used the app on an Android phone. I don't know if it works with iphone.)
