It has wifi and my 6 year old nephew does great with it.

Wifi is only available when near an access location, not all over, as with an iPhone. Still games, movies and books that have finished downloading can be accessed even if wifi is not active. Make sure to purchase a protective case. No matter how careful or responsible the child; accidents happen and a protective case makes the kindlefire for lids easier to carry and more comfortable to hold.
