Hi mike, This isn't like the days where you needed to turn to channel 3 in order to use a device! However, you will likely need to change your TV's input to the same HDMI as the port you plugged it into. If you look at the back of your TV you should see what number HDMI you plugged it into. Use your TV remote and find the Source button on it. Click through that and change the source to the appropriate HDMI number. Yes, the fire stick could always stay plugged in even if you aren't using it. Seems like personal choice if you would want to unplug it! It would just need to reconnect to wifi when you plug it back in.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You have to have an internet connection to get the streaming services. When you turn on your TV, the Fire Stick streaming options will be displayed. If you have set the device up and want to use some other device through your HDMI ports, then the Fire Stick will offer you the appropriate HDMI ports from which you can choose your device.. ie cable box, game console, ect. If there is no internet connection, then only the devices not using the internet will be displayed. As far as keeping the Fire Stick plugged in or not, that is a personal choice. It's not going to make a difference unless you are streaming your content using the device.
