“Does the latest version of the fire stick still make the screen go dark when it is paused? The earlier version did, and if that is ever corrected, it will be on all my TVs! Thx, Don65”

Mine does not make my screen go dark immediately. There is a screen saver that will turn on after so many minutes (that is customizable in your settings) but if the screen saver is not set up, then it will go dark after a period of time when it is paused.
