When you first power-up you get an ad for a new book and you can read the ad review or by-pass and go to your current book. That's the only ad you see and there are no ad's during your reading session.

They would show on your lockscreen when your kindle is in standby. The device that does not have ads would instead give the option of a randomized background image or you can set it to the book you are reading at the time.
