This is the ad supported version. The ads are on the lock screen. After purchase, you can pay Amazon to have them removed. I believe it's about $15-$20.

These special offers appear on the lock screen when you are not reading or using the device, so you would not have ads pop up as you are reading. If you do not want the special offers, you can remove them anytime by following these steps: 1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices. 2. Select Devices, and then select your device. 3. Under Special Offers, click Remove offers. A pop-up window then displays the price to remove special offers. Select End Offers and Pay the Fee to proceed. Have a great day!

Unfortunately (and dumb on Amazon's part) they are not tailored to your reading habits and once in a while a book shows on your lock screen that looks like a romance or other title that you would not read and wouldn't want others to think you are reading. It's ridiculous that it costs $20 extra to remove those ads.
