“What is this 'ADS" monthly charge? If it's required - and/or has a charge to remove it, I'm through with Kindle. (Previously owned two Kindles. Both died early deaths , frozen screen or deceased battery. Spent hours with Kindle service- no recovery.”

Hello, the ads are on the lock screen of the device. There is no monthly charge for them. If you want to remove them, there is a one time fee through your Amazon Account. I have never removed them from my devices. They only show up on the lock screen. Have a great day!
