If you have a second device that uses a USB A cable, this allows you to use it, while the lower (A) port is in use. If you have a C device and a A device, then you would not use the adapter.

This will allow you to take advantage of the PD without having to purchase another cable. And yes, you could also use it for data transfer. Yes it works with Apple Devices, however it will reduce to a decreased power amount, but it’s more than enough.
