That doesn't sound right - Wouldn't letting On Star lapse just nuke the car's built in cellular modem? You'd think you'd still be able to pair your phone with the car's built-in Bluetooth and make a hands-free call without that service. (If not, wow: That's scummy behavior on their part. A handsfree call over Bluetooth and your own phone wouldn't require any actual lift from GM's On Star service.) You might try googling other ways to pair your phone with your existing hardware. But yes, the purpose of this device is to give you an alternative way to pair Bluetooth and have an always-on "OK Google" ready mic that can be used for calls. Other reviewers report that calls placed from the phone's screen may not work as intended, but calls started through the Roav & Google Assistant voice commands should work fine.
