All TVs and devices that receive over the air signals need a receiver or tuner to process and decode the signal. They differ across makes and models so your bigger TV probably has a better built in tuner that can do a better job of deciding a weaker signal than the smaller TV.

There is also a variance between the TV's ATSC internal tuners. This is not uncommon. Using an amplified splitter or distribution amplifier should do the trick.
