Thank you for inquiry. Yes you will have to leave the USB cable connected to the computer. This way the computer can receive signals from the UPS when it is on battery to trigger your computer to shutdown.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes. It is a constant monitor to the UPS and it has to be plugged in to do anything with the UPS. The UPS will work without the USB but it will not do any sort of monitoring.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, the USB is how the computer communicates to the unit. It lets the software monitor the parameters of the battery and initiate a shutdown of the computer in case of a power outage.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. In a nutshell, the answer to your question is yes, the software allows for a "graceful" shutdown of the connected PC. With no connection the PC will not "know" that the ups is going to run out of power and as such can have an abrupt shutdown which can lead to data loss or corruption which is what the unit is geared to protect against. Note that the unit will continue to supply power until the battery runs down even if the cable is not connected.
