It is for the optional foreign plug adapters. You slide off the American adapter and you can slide on the euro, or Chinese, ETC... adapters.

Please try again later.If you slide the adapter apart you can remove the 2 AC prongs and add an AC cord to the block itself. then you can have a type of extension cord with the block part closer to you where you plug the USB adapter into and don't have to bend down all the time.
